NHL snubbing Western Conference teams - The Denver Post

The "NHL on NBC" really ought to be renamed "NHL, So Long as The Game is Played by Eastern Teams in an Eastern Time Zone,

Listen, I understand why Eastern teams get on national TV more. The league's two most marketable players — Sidney Crosby​ and Alex Ovechkin​ — play in the East. NBC is based in New York, and so primarily is the NHL's head office, making the travel easier for their gear and on-air "talent." Western time zones translate poorly to weekend sports television viewing, especially for hockey.

But come on, would a San Jose-Los Angeles or L.A.-Anaheim game really draw much poorer ratings than, say, Boston-Rangers or Philly-Washington?

Yes. Yes it would. There are more people in BOS, NY, PHI, and WSH who watch the NHL than in SJ or LA. I want to watch west coast teams as much as anyone, but no one but you thinks the ratings would compare.

The problem with that statement is more than meets the eye - the 3 hour time difference means there is no way possible to have a west coast matchup in the time slot alloted by NBC

Exactly this. I actually agree that a San Jose/Los Angeles game (or whoever as long as it's a matchup of two quality teams) would have nearly as good ratings as a Boston/NYR game if they could be played at the same time. However a game in LA or SJ would start at 10 PM eastern time. Most everyone is snoozing by then and even if they're not they won't be staying up until 1 AM to watch a hockey game. I'm as sick of seeing the same 7 teams recycled on TV over and over again as anyone out there, but it's not gonna change. That's just how things are. I definitely watch hockey on NBC and Versus much less than I used to though. I can only watch NYR and Philly etc so many times before it gets kind of boring.

He did a pretty good parody article of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" back in 2000. I liked his columns back in the day. He lacks the factual absurdity of a Dater or a Cotsonika, but isn't too dry of a writer himself.
