But... Ravens Offered Lamar Jackson $175MM In Total Guarantees; Deal No Longer On Table

So the Ravens offered over $290M over six years with $175M in total guarantees and Lamar rejected it saying he wanted it fully guaranteed.

After all the drama they ended up at $260M for five years with $185 in total guarantees.
Yep. From 30,000 feet I see a lot of posturing and a lot of damage to the overall relationship between player and organization all for them to end up right where they started.

Honestly, these over-inflated QB salaries are just getting absurd at this point lol. So this dude is gonna make $37 million /year average just based on the guaranteed $ alone, and upwards of $52 million a year? I remember as late as 2009, top-end QB's were making like $20 mil /year.

For once, I'm in total agreement nut. The Eagles were smart to get Hurts locked up now and Cinci would be wise to get Burrow done asap or this will be a lot worse for them in the long run.
Let's not forget it was the Eagles who thought they were doing the smart thing with Wentz at the time.

I do not agree that the Ravens caved. If they gave him a 100% guaranteed contract in the Watson numbers, which is what he was after all along, that would be caving. The deal they settled on was a lot closer to the Ravens previous offer than it was Lamar's demands. Lamar seeing the new deals for other QBs did not include total guarantees meant he was the one who had to cave in to his initial demands.

The contract is huge, but that's what happens with a true franchise QB's contract is up. It's only the highest until Burrow, Herbert etc get new deals,

175/6 is a lot less per year than 185/5.

29M vs 37M
The guarantee isn't per year. The only question is if it makes his next opportunity to get guaranteed money come any sooner, which it might not.

Yeah he doesn't get it like that, but in terms of his total career earnings it's that much time that he's only guaranteed so much money. I think it's a fair way to look at it.

That was such a stupid signing...

Easiest F grade I've ever given in my life.............

I get the NFL and networks have to rate it great because of 'diversity' thanks to Colin Caperdick, but this was by far the dumbest signing ever...... We're on Haynesworth terms here..

It's not a 5-year contract. It's a 5-year contract extension. Murray signed a 5-year contract extension and thus had a 6-year contract. Murray had $189.5M guaranteed, but only the 1st 3 years at $103M was fully guaranteed. The other guarantees come later in the contract in several chucks of decreasing size. No media source has said Jackson's guaranteed $185M is fully guaranteed.

That said I think the Ravens have overpaid.

Then again the last non-guaranteed year may be a bogus high figure number purely for publicity, as is the case with WR Hill in Miami.

Man, that Mahomes signing, which I thought was nuts at the time, is starting to look better and better...:D

That's why you sign good QBs for as long as you can...it only gets more expensive...and the guaranteed money really puts the cash strapped or ownership limbo teams in a real bind
