Short version, since I am leaving the office soon:
I grew up in Queens as a Mets fan. I liked the Steelers as a kid because of Joe Greene. I thought the nickname "Mean Joe" was cool as a 6 yr old, and wore his jersey all the time.
I adopted the Sox in 1975 because I liked Jim Rice. He was my favorite player, and the Sox always ran #2 to the Mets #1 until the playoffs of 1986.
I thought that Mets team was arrogant and a bunch of punks, so I actually started rooting against them against the Astros in the NLCS. I also wanted to see Rice and Evans get a ring. Plus, it was Clemens' CY and MVP season. I still have the screen name for Clemens, even though I think he is now a loser.
After that, the Sox were #1, and the Mets have been #2.
The Rangers requires no explanation.
