Colts announce that they have signed LB Akeem Ayers, who was surprisingly cut on Saturday. Rams had been holding out hope of retaining him.

I just read an article that said Joyner was going to see more snaps than Ayers, so Ayers was expendable. They called it a 4-2-5 as technically Barron is listed as a LB.
Depends on which depth chart you look at I guess. Therams.com lists 3 CB starters and 3 S starters, with only an MLB for linebackers.
That last coach on this coaching staff I'm going to second guess is Greg Williams.I hate these exotic defensive plans...Why? one injury and EVERYTHING has to change!!! However, I'm guessing one of those safeties are Barron who is really a "tweener"...

I guess when you have guys like Donald who can drop in coverage you have the flexibility to do stuff like that.
Except that we resigned Barron for how much again? We signed him for among the top guys at his position/positions...So we'd rather totally overpay a guy than lose him? a guy with no REAL postion(Barron)

Everything has to change anyway in case of injury. Backups never can fulfill the starter's roles perfectly. The name on a position in a typical setting means little as long as he knows his true role.
So then what happens when an injury takes place then we have to go back to a 4/3 or even a 3/4? Who plays LB?
Who says they do? Next safety/corner/LB up. It all depends on WHO gets hurt.
There is no way they go to a 3/4. I can't see the Rams DEs stand up and cover in space.

My point is that we have no depth at LB! What happens if Ogltree gets hurt?
When you run an exotic scheme with specific roles for certain types of players(like Barron), its that much more difficult for the "next man up" to do the job...We have an MLB coming off major injury, a "LB" who is really a safety, and just replaced half of our defensive backfield...

That "LB" is listed as a starting safety.
By the way, looks like the Rams are signing Steve Williams (CB, formerly of the Chargers)
