Giants' Jeff Samardzija to face Phillies; update on Johnny Cueto

On Friday night, Cueto, who’s returning from the Tommy John surgery he had last year, threw two scoreless inning in his second rehab outing in the rookie-level Arizona League.

Cueto’s progress has Bochy enthused.

“He came out of it well. He threw the ball very well,” Bochy said. “For him to be where he’s at, with his velocity at 92 (mph), that’s pretty impressive. That’s only going to climb as he builds strength.”

Bochy said Cueto’s next appearance is scheduled to come with Class A San Jose in Visalia either Wednesday or Thursday. He’s expected to throw approximately 40 pitches. Bochy expects Cueto will be with the big club in September.

Cueto threw 49 pitches, 36 of them for strikes, going 2 2/3 innings pitched. He gave up 4 hits (1 solo home run), no walks and 1 run against 2 strikeouts. I assume he'll be in Sacramento in 5 days for one more rehab start.

Cueto is making his season debut at AAA tonight. The plan is for him to throw 65 pitches, make one more start with Sacramento and get activated around September 8th. You can follow the game here - Aces vs. River Cats | 08/26/19

Cueto's night is over. He threw actually 65 pitches (47 for strikes) and went 4.1 innings. He gave up 6 hits (no walks) and three runs on 2 home runs. He also struck out 3 batters. I know that rehab starts aren't bout production so much as getting the arm stretched out and working on location and making pitches, but I hope his last rehab start looks better than the previous 3.

Tonight (8/31) in Sacramento

Cueto went 6 innings, 4 hits, no runs, no walks, 6 K's, 75 pitches. Against a very good El Paso team. He seems ready.
I wonder if he gets activated tomorrow or on the day he is scheduled to start - Sept. 5th.
