I absolutely can. It's one thing to lie about having met someone or where you met them at. If he wasn't part of the actual hoax I have nothing to hold against him.

Fair enough. Even if he is lying and he was in on it, it's not like he's going to jail or anything, just a juicy story really.

I personally don't care if he was in on it. But if he wasn't I don't think his name should be ran through the mud for something he didn't do.

I still can't buy it. You mean to tell me that he was in love with this girl for 3 years, but never met her? Didn't go to the funeral when she "died"? Never went to visit her in the hospital when she was sick? Add complete asshole to the list if he was hoaxed.

The funeral was the same day as the MSU game. I don't think ND would back him this hard if they didn't have evidence that he wasn't involved. Why would they? He doesn't play there anymore.

Why wouldn't they? He's the most visible ND player in recent memory, and they don't need a negative image attached when trying to recruit and stay relevant. They have to back him.

Because if they back him like he is innocent and then it comes out he wasn't and ND knew that then that would look even worse on them.

Well if ND found out he was gay and using this elaborate hoax as a way of covering it, they could have had a vested interest in helping to cover it up.... It is a Catholic school.

I just don't see it. Why would a school like ND risk it's entire reputation on 1 player. All they would have to do is say he was gay. He is graduating in May and not going to be there anymore. It isn't something they would have to deal with.

They found out before the BCS championship. That was obviously a big moment for their program and they didn't need the negative publicity.

Regardless.... While I thought that was the most obvious explanation at first, I am not leaning toward believing it was just an elaborate hoax with an incredibly gullible character. There is a lot of chatter about this scam being attempted on other athletes and I'm wondering if Te'o just happened to be the one to get caught up.

I'd still like to hear what the endgame was supposed to be. Most scams/hoaxes have some level of money/fame involved.

The big fib probably had book and movie rights tied to it.

Not a clear example, but consider, you got this tackle who plays for Baltimore, most of us probably went to see the movie about him, "The Blind Side" Not saying the Oher story isn't true, I'm sure it is, but even he said the movie took fictitious liberties to make the story more entertaining.

Whoever was behind this teo story is just a bigger liar than most.

Swarbrick (ND AD):
On the morning of December 26th, very early morning, Manti called his coaches to inform them that, while he was in attendance at the ESPN awards show in Orlando, he received a phone call from a number he recognized as having been that he associated with Lennay Kekua. When he answered it, it was a person whose voice sounded like the same voice he had talked to, who told him that she was, in fact, not dead.

Manti was very unnerved by that, as you might imagine. I will let him again talk about that and his reaction to it. But he maintained that secret vis a vis the members of the football family until he called the coaches on the morning of the 26th. They promptly reached out to me to inform me of this shocking piece of news, and I arranged to meet Manti upon his return to campus and did so on the afternoon of the 27th.

I met with Manti for about an hour and 45 minutes and asked him to review every detail of the relationship as he knew it with this woman. Manti did so, was forthright, answered every question, and was eager to share the information with me.

I met with him again the next day, as I had put the notes together from the previous day's meeting, to just review again what we had gone over to make sure I had all the details correct. And, again, he was a full and excellent partner in making sure that the information I collected was accurate.

I then took that information and shared it with other leaders in the university for a deliberation as to next steps, what we should do. Some additional questions of Manti were then developed, which he again promptly responded, and a decision was made to engage in an independent investigative firm to see if they could determine what was at the nature of what increasingly appeared to us to be a sophisticated hoax.

While apprised by that investigative firm of their work along the way, we received a final report from them on January 4th. I met with Brian and Ottilia Te'o in Miami on the 5th to share with them the essence of those findings. We left that meeting with an understanding that they would think about what they had heard, engaged Manti's future representation, which would be determined later in the week, in consultation as to how to best respond, and keep the university fully informed of their intentions and work in concert with us when they were ready to communicate the story.

It was my understanding is my understanding that they were on a timetable to release the story themselves next week when today's story broke.

ND doesn't exactly have a great record with these things. There was a sexual assault they kind of glossed over and n incident with a cheerleader and somebody falling to their death. Call me crazy but I'm not just taking Notre Dame at face value.
