Bizarre..... Makes me wonder if he is gay and he was involved with the guy that orchestrated the twitter account.

He'd have to be extremely naive to fall victim to the alleged "prank." He'd have to be even more naive to think he could get away with making up the death of a fake girlfriend as a PR stunt while the media never catches onto it..

the latter is completely insane, so I don't rule out the possibilty of the former. it's so weird I have no clue what to think..

There are multiple people speculating about his sexual preference and CBS reporter Mike Freeman is saying NFL people are aware of that. There are too many inconsistencies to believe he wasn't in on it in some way.

He says now that they met online and had an online relationship, but is on record as saying they met 3 years ago after a Stanford/ND game.

He has said they spent time together, but her pictures online weren't of her, so he didn't notice they're different?

He says he knew about it since Dec 26, but answered questions about her in an interview just before the NC game?

What was the purpose if he was duped? What was the end game for the other side? Why would they start the hoax in the first place?

Covering something up, such as sexual preference.
To cover a previous lie, possibly.
To gain sympathy, maybe
I don't know. The whole story is off the charts crazy.

The only 2 things I can think of that make any sense are that he is gay or that he really only talked to her online and just said that he met her because he was embarrassed.

To think that he started this 3 years ago for publicity when he was a no name MLB on a bad ND team makes 0 sense at all.

This is the major question for me.... What was the point? It was far too elaborate a hoax for something that was simply 'kids having fun.' I feel like he was either a) covering something up by creating a 'fake' girlfriend (sexuality?) or b) trying to create even more buzz during a potential Heisman run. I have to say that point b seems a little ridiculous - There are plenty of ways a university can create buzz for you during a Heisman run....None of which involve the complexity and risk at play here.

This started 3 years ago. That would make absolutely no sense at all since he was a no name on a bad team back then.

Good point. And that pretty much kills the idea that he was doing it for extra publicity during a trophy grab.

Here's why choice a) seems absurd to me.

if he were trying to cover something up, why create an elaborate ruse that would eventually draw more attention to it?

who knows, it might be possible. it just seems insane

As weird as it sounds, it being a hoax seems to make the most sense in a weird freaky sort of way.

This might be good for his draft stock.... At least it will provide an excuse for how much he sucked against Bama.

The ND athletic director seems convinced, and seems to have evidence, that this was a hoax and Manti was the victim. I just can't figure why anyone would engage in a three year hoax? What was the point for all the time and energy?

apparently this twitter 'persona' reached out to other athletes before Manti.... Smelling like an odd hoax.

ND said they hired the PI at their press conference. So it's looking more like Te'o is just really really dumb and naive.
