The last three coaches the Flyers have fired are all enjoying success elsewhere. Maybe I should be hoping the Leafs hire Berube...
That "Lavy guy" the philly fans were demanding to have executed a year or two ago...whatever happened to him...is he doin' alright?

I thought they were nuts to fire him

I thought the Leafs were nuts to not fire Carlyle and hire him.

I hated Torts with a passion and wanted the Rangers to pick up Lav. Then again I didn't want our current coach and he has completely proved me wrong.

People weren't demanding to let him go, they loved him, it just clearly didn't work out and everyone knew that, but they weren't demanding to let him go

Also, everyone who says the Flyers were nuts to let him go don't realize that in Nashville, he has a stacked defense and with the Flyers, he would have nothing

If he was still coaching the Flyers he wouldn't get much more out of this team, he would certainly get more out of them than Craig Berube, but they'd still be scratching and clawing just to get in the playoffs

Every great coach has great players, and while Lavy is a strong coach, having deep teams really helps and in Nashville he has that - when he was in Philadelphia and had stacked teams, they were better, when they didn't have stacked teams, like when he got fired, they weren't good - the Flyers got a good short term fix by making the coaching move but they need a coach long term

If you have the players you have a better chance to win - don't kid yourself and think this team would have done a lot more even with Lavy - Craig Berube is terrible and needs to go right now because he can't motivate this team like Lavy does but the roster needs serious fixes too

Alain? He was a great pick up.

Yep. I thought they were goign from one extreme with Torts (No offense, just block shots) to another with Alain (All O no D) and I completely missed the boat. I couldn't have been more wrong. He's done great with this team. They've kept their defensive intensity but they aren't afraid to take chances and let the goalies do their job.

I think the general feeling toward the subject, from both Flyers fans and observers alike, was Lavi was sacked to save management's asses. His coaching wasn't what was wrong with the team, even if they did wind up making the playoffs.

Alain has always had my respect, even though he's coached 2 franchises I can't stand for the life of me.

They needed a quick fix, as I said, because it could have completely went downhill that entire season and for that one season, it helped, but long term they need an answer at coach and it's not Craig Berube

Lavy has a great style of coaching and if he ever consistently had a strong, solid defense with solid goaltending with the Flyers, he would have had a cup by now - I have no idea why the hell the Flyers came out so flat at the start of that season, it baffles me

Because of my work schedule I don't get to see west coast games much so I hadn't watch much of Allain. His team did have a tendency to dive which I attributed to him but I've seen none of that with the Rangers. Like I said, I was completely off.

I was correct about Torts though. I said he'd be out of a job within a year and was right.

I think a lot of that is probably a factor of the players he has - the coach can only do so much to stop it

Certainly seems that way now because you don't see the Rangers diving. He seems to have kept the valuable defensive lessons Torts instilled while actually allowing the team to play offense. At the end of the day the Rangers have 1 sniper in Nash. The rest of them can score but they need plenty of opportunities. Zuc my develop into a shooter if they can convince him to keep shooting. Kreider has a shot too.

Torts remind me a little of Iron Mike in that he has a short "shelf life". A smart coach who can get players to achieve but at a cost. As soon as things go wrong everyone turns on him, In Vancouver things never really went right so things imploded very quickly

To be fair, the other three were actually qualified coaches. But you can try Berube if you want.

Scapegoat. The Flyers problems have rarely come from the ice or the locker room, almost always from the mahogany lined halls upstairs. And even where there are legit problems on the ice or the room, Management has always fucked the dog in handling it. Lavy was not perfect, but management saw that there was a problem and they rushed to point a finger and he had the ax fall on him.

Players disagree? Trade the two guys who just signed to long term deals.

Goalies don't like each other? Trade the one who will win a Vezina in two years. Then buy out the other one.

Foot itches? Shoot it.

Now we have the Mason/Reese thing and Reese is the one to go. I don't know what happened, and I don't really care. But I do know from experience that giving Steve Mason the impression he has that much power over who coaches him will end badly.

don't disagree with the top part, but from what the repots have said the bold is wrong. Reese and the Flyers "parted ways" because Reese was standing up for Mason. Reese didn't like how the Flyers were using a pretty banged up Mason and was vocal about it. Sounds like the Flyers didn't like that he wasn't getting line and he's gone.

Mase and Reese, from all accounts, were very close.

Well, leave it to the Flyers to fuck up their relationship with their franchise goalie after spending 30 years looking for one.
