Just realized both got traded. Both have similar stats and similar situation ans ages.

Did the devils pay too much for Corey?

I'd prefer Corey.

Corey was given the chance to be a #1 last year and took off with it.

Bernier was given the chance to be a #1 for multiple years and never really was able to prove anything, eventually getting replaced by Quick

I have Schnieder abover Bernier in most scenarios... eye test, I was a bigger fan of Corey compared to Bernier, who's not bad himself but Corey had me...

I'll take Corey over Johnny. More games, better numbers and I agree, at first look Schneider strikes me as the better goalie.

Bernier really hasnt shown anything yet and I have never heard of a single scout that thought he was even as good as Corey let alone better.

And they are burning Gillis in effigy in Vancouver so.....

CORY Schneider has proven way, way more than Bernier. I don't think it's even close.

corey GP W L OTL GA SO GAA SV%

NHL totals 98 55 26 — 8 197 9 2.20 .927

johnny

NHL totals 62 29 20 — 6 136 6 2.36 .912

both stat lines are incredibly close both same level of "experience" whats 30+ games over 3 years age?

to save one has proved more then the other isnt really right imo.

the question was did nj over pay with a top 10 pick compared to the leafs? think it was a backup goalie a 2nd rounder and a d man?

I don't think so. There's a reason the going rate for Schneider was higher than Bernier. Most people say it was a steal for the Devils. Also, Lombardi in my opinion is one of the better GMs in the league. If he could've got a first for Bernier he would have.

I think those 30+ games make a big difference. Those stats actually very much favor Schneider, I don't think they're that comparable. One of those stat lines is clearly better than the other. If Bernier went for like a 3rd rounder I would say we overpaid, but LA got a pretty decent return. I think both trades were pretty beneficial and equal for the teams involved.

of course corey is going to have a better stat line hes played in 30 more games 3 shutouts more .16 better gaa .15% better. thats not that much of a difference there imo both are very good stat lines.

also

3 years younger and a RFA.

i'm glad the devils got him and all but come on lets be a little objective here.

put it this way

fayne 2nd rounder and wedge or kinkaid for bernier

or

#9 for schinder

Time could tell. Based off of what we know, Schneider's stats are better than Bernier's to the point where he probably should have had a higher asking price. And since the people in the know had Schneider's asking price higher than Bernier's I'd say he's probably the safer bet in the long run.

I guess the real question is how much greater is 9th overall pick than 2nd Rd Pick + 3rd Liner + Backup Goalie. Personally I think Schneider's stats compensate for the disparity between those two trades.

Those SV %s are no where near as close as you're making them out to be.

Also Schneider prove this year that he's a starter. Started 30 Games out of 48 taking the starting job from a hall of fame goaltender. Also, they're actually like 2 yrs and 4 months apart or something close to that.

Like I said above the Devils got the sure thing and I'd pay more for that any day.

Note: One more thing. Bernier played on an amazing defensive team. Schneider and the Canucks aren't known for their D, and he's still putting up those #s.

I love Marty, but 20 games into next season, we'll all be calling for Cory to become the defacto starter. Marty won't even have to be playing badly. Cory will be that good. I saw this kid play when he was at BC, he's a beast.

Dude, .912 vs .927 is basically a 1B starter vs a Vezina candidate.

It's 4th best vs 21st best this season.
Last season it was 6th best vs 29th best.

Enormous gap.

Another crazy stat. If you look at goalies that have played an equal # of games OR MORE to Cory over the past three years, here are his SV% rankings.

10-11: 3rd
11-12: 2nd
12-13: 4th

A little off topic here but the Leafs faced an insane amount of shots against last season. So if Bernier is able to get the starting job he'll be tested. Muchhh more then he was in Los Angeles and much more if he was our goalie.

I dont know who will be better the next couple of years but I think its clear why Schneider was shopped and was traded for a more expensive package.
