The West Florida Argonauts won their first Division II football national championship with a 48-40 win over Minnesota St. This is just UWF's fourth season of fielding a football team. They finished the season 13-2, with an early season 20-13 road loss to Carson-Newman (which made it to the second round of the playoffs before falling to Lenoir-Rhyne. The other loss was 26-21 at defending national champion, Valdosta St.
Except for the neutral-site championship game at McKinney, TX, all of the Argonauts playoff wins were on the road, including a 38-35 payback win against Valdosta St. in the second round. The Argos last 4 games were against undefeated teams, and their playoff opponents had an overall record of 59-1 prior to facing the Pensacola team.
UWF's Austin Reed was 33 of 54, with one interception, 523 yards & 6 TDs in the championship game. Quentin Randolph grabbed 10 of those passes for 254 yards & 3 scores, and Tate Lehtio had 13 catches for 139 yards & one TD.
MSU's R. Schlichte was 24-39-0 for 309 yards & 2 TDs. The Vikings lost 3 of 5 fumbles during the game. UWF lost their only fumble. The Argos also made the championship game in 2017. This is the second straight championship by a Gulf South Conference team, and a 4th straight finals appearance for a GSC school.
