Um, I don't think the Flames have enough cap space to sign both Tkachuk and Gardiner (I mean, without moving out some significant dollars).
Is Gardiner still out there for big money?

It's mid-August, I think he's getting close to Cody Franson territory now (although he is 5x the player Franson ever was).

Don't get me wrong, I like Jake Gardiner, but since the Flames still have TJ Brodie, I don't think it makes much sense to allocate more dollars to defensemen (even with the Valamaki injury). Let's see what a full season of Kylington brings and if Brodie has a good season, it's a win-win.

I thought you couldn't sign someone after buying them out? Wasn't that why the Caps traded Orpik so Colorado could buy him out?

I think that only applies to compliance buyouts, not the garden variety buyouts.

Compliance buyouts were only permitted to be executed on a contract that was entered into on or before Sept. 15, 2012. They were also permitted to be performed on a 35-plus contract.

For one season following a compliance buyout, players were not permitted to rejoin the team which performed the buyout (this restriction does not exist for normal buyouts).

So all that noise about Orpik's buyout last year was just nonsense and the Caps just didn't want the buyout hit on their books. Got it.

One RFA left and that one doesn't appear to be close at the moment...
