I think it comes down to scouting. I can't think of a single Oilers pick outside of the first round, currently on the team, who is playing a major role (eg. top 6 F, top 4 D or starting goalie). That's a huge problem.

Look at the list of important players for the final 4 teams last year who were taken outside the first round.

Arvidsson 4th
Ekholm 4th
Josi 2nd
Rinne 8th (lol)

Sheary undrafted
Guentzel 3rd
Letang 3rd
Murray 3rd

Hoffman 5th
Stone 6th
Pageau 4th

Vatanen 4th
Gibson 2nd


And I'm sure I've missed some, but these are all homegrown and drafted outside of the 1st round. Edmonton has nothing like that.
