provies:

This was Benning last week:

“We want to do hockey trades. We have some UFAs to see if there’s interest in them and the point I was trying to make is there a hockey trade to be made for somebody with
size and strength ( btw - Motte = 5.10, Leipsic = 5.10), who can play in our top nine.”

OK, fair enough.

But consider this question:

If Benning announces to the NHL the Canucks are looking for hockey trades, why the hell would any team offer a draft pick?

Take CBJ.

If you show your cards and say you want hockey trades, and CBJ knows you have a history of taking 22-23 year old players, of course they’re going to play hardball with this knowledge.

Of course they’re going to say, here’s the player, take him or leave him.

And if you really want him, you have to take Jussi too.

CANUCKS: NO ONE IS OFFERING US DRAFT PICKS

Why can’t the organization find ways to acquire picks?

Benning: “That’s a good question.

“I would have preferred to get picks.

“It wasn’t available to us so we had to do the next best thing and try to identify young players who can be a piece of the puzzle moving forward.”

If true, and I’m willing to accept it is, what was with all that hockey trade talk last week?

MEANWHILE IN EDMONTON: EVERYONE IS OFFERING US DRAFT PICKS

Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli saying he tried to get players who would immediately help the Oilers, and was able to do so on one deal, the Mark Letestu trade, but not with his trades of Patrick Maroon and Brandon Davidson, which brought in third round picks this year and next year.

“It was a tough market out there…It just felt a lot harder, a lot more resistance this year. I think that’s a function of the league, the significance that is put on those young prospects, and I guess the next level would be those picks. We’re happy with what we did. It’s not pleasant to be a seller. But we felt comfortable in our returns. We’ll look possibly to use those picks to pick a player, but more probable that we try to use them acquire a player in the summer.”

"Did you ask for picks?"

"Ummmmmm, wellll... you see what had happened was..."

Jarmo was burned last year letting go of a first trying to keep Johnson and Anderson, so the first was off the table. But they would have probably given up a later rounder or two instead of Jussi (he can help us in Cleveland).

Feels like Benning just jumped at what was in front of him because it was the only deal.

And it also makes me wonder if Jarmo wasn't so wrapped up in other conversations if he could have pried Gagner away too.

I think Benning is catching shit for the public’s unrealistic expectations. He was scoring at a better per-game clip at the deadline last year (although he had slowed down quite a bit into February) and he was flipped for a draft bust and a conditional 3rd that I’m guessing didn’t convert because the Panthers missed the playoffs. So here he is a year older, having failed as a rental as recently as 12 months ago, and suddenly his worth is supposed to have changed?

Maybe he could’ve gotten a 5th rounder or something later but I don’t think there was any way in hell he was ever going to get something anybody actually wanted here. It seems like there's just disappointment that the players that came back are junk.
