It's not the norm.

The town I grew up in had a crazy Vietnam Vet who lived in the woods. Hobo Bob. Hobo Bob would stop people and talk about the lizard people controlling the world and how Vietnam was designed to round up the people who knew the truth and kill them but he escaped. He chased high school girls often. He would occasionally throw rocks at police cars. Next town up had a crazy guy too. The people I knew there said he was always talking about the dangers of radio towers and TV antennas. Even though he lived less than 10 miles from Hobo Bob, the two never knew of each other.

The internet has now connected this massive network of Hobo Bobs and convinced them all that not only are their crazy psychoses valid but important. And as long as they are clicking "articles" with ads, there is going to be someone making sure their echo chamber exists unencumbered in order to profit off them. Why try and fix a glaring mental health crisis that is worsening when you can make a few pennies off it?

And a co-worker who is a nurse states a good indicator for how long you should wash your hands is to sing the happy birthday song.
