My youngest is a really good artist/animator and has her heart set on a particular art college in Florida that places lots of animators at Disney.

I am not looking forward to telling her that she will need to choose another university. I really do not want to send her to that shit hole for 4 years.

So should my wife and I look into bullet proof vests for our upcoming vacation to Florida?

When it was time we for my daughter to choose post secondary, she completely eliminated US schools. As a female and person of (half) colour, she didn't like the direction and didn't want to commit to 4 years there.

For our Christmas vacation, we picked a cruise out of Barbados instead of Florida. Didn't want to spend a dine in death sentence's state.

If you don't mind me asking how is she feeling about the way things are going there? My sister in law has been north of Tampa for 8 years and says it feels completely different the last 2 years, like more tense. However, she likely agrees with some of DeSantis' ideas. I also have a cousin who has been in Key West since 1992 and he and his wife say even crazy old Key West feels different. And LGBTQ people they know say even there they feel unsafe. Their daughter works for Disney and is trying to get moved to Cali, and they are looking to move somewhere else. However they are both flaming liberals such that make me look like a member of the Cheney family. So that could be playing into their perception.

And I think that a college like FSU would be less a target for DeSantis and his quest against gays and trans people than the small art school my kid wants to go to. Art schools tend to attract a... different type of student. She currently has bright purple hair, a Trans best friend and a BLM Hoodie she wears most days. Like I said, "woke". She actually got into an argument in AP Gov class when they were discussing DeSantis' definition of "woke" as a belief in systemic injustice and a desire to change it. Her thought was basically something is wrong with you if you want to stop people from fighting for justice. A classmate disagreed.

I will say that she has had enough of Florida but it's not because she doesn't feel unsafe or threatened. It's just time.
She wants to move to San Diego. She loves the weather and surfing. However, that appears to be out of reach financially. She is looking at various other, coastal towns with good weather and surfing. She isn't a fan of the extremist political culture on either side.

She is not a person who would argue politics or religion, knowing full well that those are passionate/volatile topics, and you will very rarely sway someone's opinion.

She doesn't have significantly different appearance that may draw attention and some unfavorable first impressions by some..or identify in a group that would be unjustly scorned by some, no matter what part of the country you live in.

I would only recommend that if your kid is highly vested to go to this school, you speak with them about your concerns, offer some guidance in the challenges and positives they may face in a very conservative state. Let them know you are there for them and it's not like they have to stay at that school if it's not meeting their expectations.
