Assuming this isn’t inflation-adjusted, $3.51 US in 2008 is $4.75 today.

Throw in some higher taxes (carbon taxes etc. in effect in some states) and some sectors of the gasoline supply chain seeing higher inflation than CPI as well as, yeah, some higher demand for profit from producers and you’re basically where you were.

And even with that and say we want to implement some kind of windfall tax there are dozens of levers these companies can then pull to make up for it and bring us back to square one.

The inflation means that the Oil companies just need to gouge further. Pretty much record profits for most the last 2-3 quarters. But yeah the price hike is all about the carbon tax to some.
