What did he do to deserve to be fired?
Didn't live up to expectations, I guess. They started out #16 this year, then went 7-5 in a pretty weak division. He was a promoted from within, maybe they think they can do better with a splashy hire, idk. They're currently sitting at #51 in recruiting for '22, may have something to do with it. Were #10 in '21, #35 in '19, #6 in '18. So they had talent, in theory. May be they think he's underperforming it.

So do they think Cristobal is the answer?

He is a great recruiter. Not sure how good of a game coach he is? His coaching resume before Oregon sucked, and he inherited a lot of talent at Oregon but has only gotten them into the Top 25 once so far and might not this year, either? But Oregon fans claim he's a great coach, so he'll get a raise if he stays or if he goes to Miami?

Diaz was not great.

But, getting fired so they can hire Cristobal who is 10-7 in his last 17 games??

Miami is shelling out a lot of money for a guy who was VERY GOOD but not GREAT at Oregon.

And that was with USC being as bad as humanly possible during his years, so Oregon never had a real recruiting challenger out West.

Cristobal was something like 27-47 at his first coaching gig, too.

FIU is a dump. They had just started up a football program. In his first year, he went 1-11 with an empty FIU football. Mario by year 5 had 8-wins at FIU, which is unheard of. And that's with an inept AD in Pete Garcia. But you don't know shit about the climate in South Florida football, so continue to scour the Wiki without having context.

And right after FIU, Mario got hired by Saban. So clearly there was something there.

There may have been? He IS a great recruiter, and as a Gopher BB fan, I know that a coach can win big games on nothing but the strength of good players playing well, and despite the horrible coaching.

But then I look at Oregon. UW has been down, Stanford has fallen a great deal, USC is going through one of it's worst periods, so there was a vacuum in the Pac and Oregon had Uncle Phil's money to help and all they accomplished under this guy is ONE single solitary Top 25 ranking. WVU and WSU and Minnesota can all claim as much as can many other programs. Hardly what I'd call overwhelming. But hey, he's not coming to Minnesota so if you want him and like the hire, congrats I guess.

Cristobal getting a 10 year/$80m+ deal at Miami. Holy fuck.
So it's all about the money then. I really wish Mario was staying at Oregon. Now I'm hearing Chip Kelley may return. Don't these coaches have any loyalty?

News to me.
Hey, I might be wrong. I'm going off memory, I am sure I saw a post claiming Oregon offered Cristobel an upgraded contract days, maybe weeks ago? I believe it was before one of the Utah losses. It might have been before the 1st loss? But it was definitely before the 2nd loss. Oregon knew other programs were looking at their coach and they tried to convince him to stay.

Looks like the signs are pointing to Anthony Poindexter being the next coach at UVA.
