Coach Ron Rolston fined - Update: Kessel suspended rest of pre-season

Shanny said he has no history of doing this 20 seconds after showing him swinging his stick against one of the Flyers. I know I said wasn't going to comment on this again but that's as lame as it gets.

Edit: Make that 14.6 seconds. I just had to check because I can't believe what he said.

Can't watch at the moment Boss, but if I remember correctly, didn't he say that Kessel has no history of supplemental discipline, not that he has no history of stick swining?

Yes he did but it's ironic that he shows Kessel swinging his stick in "one of two" incidents against the Flyers just six days ago. So technically he's right but it's obvious (even to Shanny) that Kessel has no problem swinging his stick at players with intent to injure. Why wasn't Kessel disciplined for the incidents against the Flyers? And as we have said before that "The player did not suffer an injury" bullshit has got to go. Intent, not result.

I heard about the BS fine, the BS Suspension & flipped my lid but good. All I can say if another coach does what Rolston did ( which was in all things, NOTHING ) watch shanaban be inconsistent. All john Scott did was shove kessel. Kessel chops him with a stick and gets a miserable 3 PRE SEASON suspension?!?! Clarkson gets to finish out the 3 preseason games & is banned 10 games in the regular season, which i'm fine with, i would have been fine with 3 games for kessel, but they should have been served in the regular season. They only did this to help the leafs with their potential cap issues, I know I'm a Sabres fan and all, but I would be PO'd if this would have happened to any other team like it did the Sabres.

So it's ok to use your stick for self defense as long as no one restrains the opposing party? Good to know.. game on Shanaban, game on

BTW..where is Carlye's fine? he should know if his players are on the bench, on the ice or wacking off in the shower, for not keeping control of his bench fine him..not to mention the fact the fine on Rolston is complete BS since Carlye had last ups..I remember when Lindy sent the goon squad on the Sens, he deserved the fine for the blatant attempt to hurt the Sens, but Rolston who let a perfectly rested player stay on the ice to maybe finish out a shift gets a fine?!?!?! The madness needs to end!!

The helmet rule is the NHL's silent way to taking fighting out of the sport without actually saying they want to take fighting out of the sport, so the game before with the leafs and Sabres, kaleta hurt his hand & I'm sure other players will get the same results too, unless they start learning how to do upper cuts. Just regulate that fight coems with suspensions and be upfront about it

Are people really upset that the Sabres coach was fined? In a vacuum, the fine makes perfect sense IMO. Scott intentionally started a brawl by going after Kessel. He knew what would happen. Kessel's not a fighter. And what difference does it make that the Leafs had last change? If anything, the fact that Kessel was sent out, and not the Leafs' goons, shows that the Leafs weren't interested in a brawl.

The league doesn't want line brawls. It's pretty common to fine coaches when these sort of things happen. I know Scott was already out there - maybe Rolston knew what was going to happen, maybe he didn't. But the league has sent it's message, so maybe next time he'll have a few words with Scott before the whistle.

The outrage about Kessel's joke of a suspension I understand. The first slash is fine IMO - despite what some of you claim, Scott had his gloves off and was going after Kessel. He wasn't tied up with any other Leafs at that point. The second slash, unacceptable. Should have been some regular season games.

The way I see it, it's a lot like George Washington cutting down the cherry tree. Sure, what he did was wrong, but he was George Washington, so how could you get mad at him for cutting down a tree?

Phil Kessel = George Washington

Brendan Shannahan = George Washington's dad

I think the costly part for Kessel isn't so much the 3 pre-season games he's going to miss. It's the fact that he no longer has a clean record. He's going to have to learn to stop swinging his stick so often (I had no issue with the 1st one either), or he's going to start sitting out a lot more than 3 games.

I think the key phrase is "player selection" - When a coach is thinking that he might get fined by the league if he sends the wrong player over the boards, he's a coach on thin ice (pardon the pun). As for the last change, it makes a big difference as Carlyle admits he sent Kessel and Bozak out there to diffuse the situation (as in he knew trouble was brewing). He had the option to send other players out there when he saw who Buffalo sent out and chose not to do so.

Kessel got off a bit easy. He really should have sat two regular season games. Although I don't really hold it against Scott for doing his job, you have to know that all hell would ensue by challenging Kessel to put up yer dukes.

So let me ask you this, would Rolston still be fined if Scott is out there and a fight doesn't happen? You notice they didn't say what rules Rolston broke to deserve a fine, only that is was for "player selection and team conduct." How is that even possibe if you look at what was going on in that game.

1) Scott was playing the whole game, and was still on the ice when the Kessel line was sent out by Carlyle. It wasn't like he was just riding the bench the whole game and Rolston sent him out to fight.

2) The fight happened with about 10 minutes left in the 3rd period. The fine wouldn't be an issue if the fight occured in the final 5 minutes as per rule 46.22, but it didn't.

3) The Sabres already were down 2 players before the fight started, so it's not a surprise Scott was still out there on the ice.

4) Carlyle had the ability of last change, and STILL decided to send out his star player in a meaningless preseason game, when he had to know something could happen. Carlyle even admitted he should of done it differently in hindsight.

5) The fine on Rolston is simply a result of Shanny trying to appease Toronto in someway after they handed out suspensions to 2 of their top players. Toronto would have lost their shit if Buffalo walked away with nothing.

6) The fine is a joke, the 3 game preseason suspension for Kessel is a joke, and most people in the NHL know this. Coaches are pissed because of what it could mean now from here on out, and Kessel is showing how much of a little bitch he is.

7) GO SABRES!!!!
