Ray Farmer: Hoyer is better than Manziel ?by a substantial margin? | ProFootballTalk

WTF.... These guys just can't get out of their own way. What's sad is that they have a roster that can win the division with a qb. But what do they do? They take a qb in the first round and immediately try to publicly demoralize the guy. Not sure what their goal is here.

As much as Mike Brown is a clown, at least when he drafted an inferior talent like Dalton, he pretended the kid was good.

Meh. I believe Hoyer was 3-0 with Cleveland last season before he got injured. One of those wins came against Cincinnati.

2 weeks into Dalton's career with the Bengals, Jordan Palmer (during the lockout I believe) was organizing OTA's. Do I like their style that they have to come out and publicly say it? Absolutely not. But it really isn't that big of a deal.

The list of Cleveland quarterbacks that have beaten the Bengals is not an exclusive club.... But you're right -- We should give Hoyer credit for his impressive wins against Minnesota and Buffalo (a game he didn't even finish).

My thinking is that if you're going to go all in an a potentially transformative player, then go all in..... Even the Cleveland players are displaying this standoff attitude toward a guy that's been drafted to turn them around.

Yeah, Jordan Palmer led OTAs here - But there were no coaches as the lock-out was going on. The Bengals basically anointed Dalton the starter from day 1. Right strategy, wrong player.

the public comments are unprofessional.

He has a phone, he can call him. "hey John, this is the ceo. keep the PR on the downlow, ok? we want you in the playbook this year, working on your mental game. We're not trying to just send you out to the lions, so to speak. basically, you're a backup QB, don't let them suck you into a bunch of interviews, you don't have time for that. well, it's been nice talking to you, look forward to watching you play for me in a year or two."

We should give Hoyer credit for making throws that Dalton couldn't even dream of making. The guy was on fire. And, he did beat the Bengals - a 10-6 club. The Browns looked like a different team with Hoyer under the helm. There's no reason to be surprised they're giving him a chance.

And if I recall correctly, the Vikings haven't just handed anything over the Bridgewater either. Again, IIRC, there were articles stating as much. The silly comments to the media are ridiculous, but they aren't doing any thing wrong by telling him he has to win the job.

Btw, it wasn't too difficult to see Dalton is much better than Jordan. He "won" the job. The coaches based his starter status based on probably game film and throws in practice. Heck, they never officially officially turned it over to him until training camp. There were reports that some coaches were still holding out hope that Carson would show up for TC. So, again, generally, teams make their QB's win the job.

The lockout didn't end until late July..... They started practice a week later and Dalton was the anointed starter before the team's first scrimmage. If they based it on performance, they were basing it on 4 practices at most.

In general I think it's a good idea to have a competition and make the kid earn it. In the case where you have a polarizing figure like Manziel, I don't think you have that kind of luxury. It's a distraction and it could cause division in the locker..... It's particularly a distraction because of rumors (reports) that it was really the owner that wanted him and not the management. If the owner is for you, but the coaches and players against I think it's a toxic situation. If I were a Browns fan, I would prefer that my coaching staff accept that fact that they have gone all in with Johnny Football. Get the team behind the kid and see what he can do. If he flames out, so be it..... But why put off the inevitable.

BTW -- Interesting start to the Browns season

@Pittsburgh
New Orleans
Ravens
@Titans
Pittsburgh

That's a tough slate of early games..... They get a pretty good break in the middle, but they could struggle early.

2-4 seems pretty attainable, possibly 3-3.

I think Dalton's purpose in life is to make other people look good. he fits in well.

Totally subjective comment here.

I have no clue what CLE is doing...I could be flat out wrong and will admit as much if I am, but I don't think JM is a great fit for the AFCN

Hoyer is a solid player...right now definitely has to be better than JM.

The problem is, he's as good as he's going to be imo...he's the perfect stop gap to your franchise QB...it won't be Manziel...Next year, I expect CLE to be picking top 5 or worst case top 10 between their pick and BUF's...Would you pass on the kid from UCLA, or FSU? With Gordon's issues they might go WR, but I expect them to take another QB in the 1st round by the'16 draft.

They rarely have success against the Steelers.

The Saints are one of the top 5 teams in the NFC.

The Ravens are one year removed from a championship.

3 wins in the first 6 would be exceptional for Cleveland.... Especially given some of the bums they play in the middle of the year.

Yea I hate how they basically told Manziel "Remember, you ain't shit yet!" Like damn, I understand you want to keep his arrogance in check and humble the kid, but don't try to break him down before he even starts his first preseason. There's plenty of times he will be broken down during the preseason, and also us Browns fans have no problem letting someone know when we aren't pleased. But the front office needs to stop saying shit like that.
