The Sens are going to cut their losses and shed serious salary according to Bruce Garrioch. Yeah, he's not exactly reliable all the time but I think he makes some sense in this article.
Senators ready to cut bait | Hockey | Sports | Ottawa Sun
On the market:
Jarkko Ruutu
Chris Phillips
Alex Kovalev
Filip Kuba
Brian Lee
I have trouble finding a suitor for a few of those guys...not sure how many GMs are going to WANT to bring Ruutu in knowing the baggage he can bring along. Kovy is tempting, but he just seems lazy and unmotivated anymore. There's a small portion (my 8 year-old self that loved the man) of me that really is tempted to vote for Kovy to Pitt...but I just can't see it happening. Not dedicated enough to work in Pens system.

Lee already cleared waivers once. I don't think he has much value.
Kuba is coming off an injury. Kovalev is out for a week. Phillips is making a lot of money, but at least he'll be an UFA at the end of the year. So he could be a bit easier to trade.
I was just thinking that Detroit may now be a possible destination for Chris Phillips with Stuart out long term.
What would you Wings fans trade for Phillips?

Jonathon Ericsson and a doughnut!
LOL...I'll just take the doughnut and call it a deal.
Ericsson has been a bit disappointing this year. I've seen enough of him to know.
I'll gladly take a 1st round pick though or a 2nd round pick and forward prospect.
They would give up a bag of pucks for him.
Because that's all they have to. Murray has once again painted himself into a corner.
And Fisher will wind up in either Nashville or LA. Carrie Fisher has houses in both places. One way or the other he will not be away from her for that long. Even if he is traded somewhere else, he'll get there. You pretty much saw it coming when he announced his engagement.
Natch, I would love to see both in Columbus. And with Commie having fallen out of favor and Klesla a bit resurgent but still not fitting in... I'd love Phillips here. Too lazy to see what the Klesla for Phillips salary crunch looks like, but each guy fills the need for the opposite team. Cbus has tons of mobile guys and no one to punish incoming forwards, and it seems coach Arniel can only manage one kind of guy - the quiet, compliant type. The Sens need a guy who can TRULY run a power play. And skate backwards.
Howson and Murray are both on the hot seat, so it could be a perfect storm.
Maybe, but he's big and young and Swedish! Hakan Anderson found him! You want the Ericsson...
Something about the magic of Holland's drafting makes me more interested in waiting the nine years for that 1rst round pick to finally make the team than one post season of Chris Phillips.
I like the guy, I think at this point it's more of a cap issue. When the Wings get healthy, I believe they will have to waive someone or send them to the minors just to get under.
Phillips has a 3.5M cap hit... the Wings would have to trade Filpulla, or Cleary + just to make that happen.
Phillips for Klesla would be a mistake however. The team just needs to start adding draft picks and prospects like crazy for the next 2 or 3 years.
I agree with this but the team could easily be competitive next year. Not a contender but a potential playoff team in the weak Eastern Conference.
If Lehner and Elliott make up the goaltending duo and one or two of Cowen, Gryba, Wiercioch or Rundblad make the big club nest year, they will have a ton of money to spend. As it stands right now, more than $14M is coming off of the books this summer. Not easy to do, but if that cap space is managed properly they could be pretty good.
If Spezza can play half decent again, I think they could be a 6-8 seed next year. That's a lot of IFS but it's not out of the question.
That being said they need to let this group of very good D-men prospects develop and stockpile picks and let a contender develop from within.
