Chips offense is pass first? Says who?

I know many think this spread offense is pass first and while Chip always says it is not people tend to not believe him.

Since Chip has been the head coach.....there are NFL Rankings

4th in rushing attempts

2nd in Yards per carry

2nd in Yards per game

They are going to pound the ball, force teams to cheat against the run then have Bradford do what he did at Oklahoma out of the spread. Both Mathews and Murray are excellent "between the tackles" runners ... I expect Bradford to pass the ball less this year than we've seen out of the Eagles QB spot in recent history. Last year I think we ran it 41% of the time; I figure this year we'll be closer to 50%.

Running backs who can catch, block, and hit the hole. Imagine that. With the up-tempo offense, it'll be good to have a rotation of fresh, high-caliber bodies out there.

Most teams run about 60 plays per game. Last year the Eagles ran 70. Next year maybe 80. With those number of plays, they will both pass and run a lot.

I think a lot of people have the mistaken impression that the fast tempo means pass first. In fact, Chip runs more than he passes. But he does it with multiple backs to keep the runners fresh.

This. Chip's offense has always been run first. Those who think it is pass first don't know what they're talking about -- they're the same kind of people that think he needs a QB like Mike Vick to run his offense properly.

The numbers don't even matter. Chip wants to build everything else off the run up the middle. He's talked about his philosophies about it. His old high school coach never passed and kept all 11 guys in. Chip thought it was cool you could move defenders around by splitting guys out wide and then slamming it up the middle anyway with more easily identifiable blocks for your linemen to read.

Yes and no. Just because we are a run-first team doesn't mean we won't have good passing numbers. Chip uses the run to set up high-percentage pass plays.

Heard the same thing type of comments while at Oregon. It's funny.

Well informed fans who actually pay attention know by now that Chip's O is run-based, he just does out of a formation that implies pass-first.

We are going to run the piss out of the ball this year, and I love it!

The "between the tackles" philosophy is why Shady is gone and replaced "luckily" by Murray and Mathews. Shady is not a one cut and hit the hole kind of Back, he's a sportscenter runner ... one or two big runs where he jukes 3 or 4 defenders and gains 40 yards. The rest of his carries 22 for 50 ... if you look at the final stats it's 23 for 90, but in the big picture how much did Shady help the team? Murray/Mathews with Sproles sprinked in (Sproles had more rushing TD's than Shady last year for those who aren't Eagles fans) will be much more effective in this system.

The difference is that Chip goes uptempo too. Its actually brilliant, because you can still score big but you also take less chances with the ball. Should lead to very few turnovers & a lot of wins if you also have that D.

If Bradford reverts to college guy, we'll have a guy who will do really well in this O. THis would be similar to Aikman in Dallas. But Bradford is closer to Montana style. He can run pretty good.

Bradfords college tape is pretty darn good. Excellent footwork, mobility & accuracy. Gotta have a QB atleast this good (if healthy) imo. Most times anyway.
