Hate the move because he does not instill the confidence that he can right a ship. He had talent in Philly and didn't understand how to use it. He kept using DeMarco Murray in the McCoy role which Murray is not suited for. Further, his defenses are historically some of the worst. You throw in noodle arm Gabbert who can't throw for a 1st down on 3rd and 5 (not saying we have options, just stating facts) it makes for a messy upcoming year.

If Kap is on the team opening day Gabbert won't be the starting QB anyway. I also think this is a high risk/high reward deal. The front office is feeling the pressure and didn't want to go with a rookie QB and have a bust season again. It'll mean Baalke's job and he know it. His only chance is getting a guy who can salvage Kap and I would pick Kelly over Shanahan for Kap as well.

Shanahan hasn't developed a QB ever unless you count Griese and we saw with RGIII the dual threat type of guy doesn't fit Shanahan. He also wasn't popular with his players by the time he got fired from Washington either and he's been out of the game for two years and it's not like people are banging down his door for his services either.

Kelly isn't my ideal hire either, but it's a lot better than what we had and if he can salvage Kap it saves us from a decade of crap.

Did Shanahan want more control of the team than the FO wanted to give??

Maybe Kelly learned his lessons in Philly, and won't be such a meddler in that respect, and will just focus on coaching now.

At least they didn't go the Coughlin route.

Hope it works out for you guys.

I think Chip needs to dump the hurry up ... It puts too much pressure on your defense if your O isn't dominating... I've watched Philly tire out their defense over and over in games... Chip needs to reevaluate running hurry up all the time, it's ok sometimes just not all the time...

Ok I had time to think about this. Im going to be Honest. At first hated this move but then I really thought about it. I think people hate Kelly the GM not Kelly the coach. He has won 10 games 2 out of 3 years and he helped 2 QBs with in those 2 years. He is a proven HC and an offensive minded coach. Our Offense was a mess.

Overall this is a BIG up grade over Tomsula. If Kelly can be just the HC I think we might of found our selves a steal here. Now its Baalke turn to help this team out talent wise. we have 50+ mill to spend and some nice draft picks. Just as insurance we need to draft a QB in this draft. This will be Kaps last shot.

Overall i give this move a B- with a chance to be am A+ but a chance to be an F. Its either Boom or Bust with this move. He needs to sign a Big name DC to help him out.

Lovie Smith?

Kap's potential, confidence & talent is there.....all he really lacks is the consistency, maturity & discipline to get back to where he was a few yrs ago.

Really? REALLY???!!!

Kaep's potential? What potential?! He hasn't shown anything.

Double F*ck!! He lost respect from his players. Niners must love getting sloppy seconds. This must mean that Kap is going to stay. Niners do not have the personnel to run his offense. I'm sure Gamble fully endorsed this move.
One thing that concerns me is that a lot of black players don't seem to like playing for him. I believe the 49ers disagree with you about being able to run his offense though. I think they'll give Kaepernick another shot.

I'm interested to see how this plays out, to say the least. In an ideal world, Kaep is a good fit for Chip's offense.

I would like to see the team target the other major needs (the line mainly) in the draft and stick with Colin one more season. Maybe pick a QB prospect (Taysom Hill?) late. See what Colin can do in a new system (probably awful, but we have so many other needs).
Yep. At least I'm interested now.

Yes. He is that terrible. There is absolutely no upside to having him in there. The league has caught up to him and he has not adapted whatsoever.

People are only enamored by his physical traits and they ignore the fact that HE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO PLAY THE POSITION.

That shouldn't be an issue. There aren't that many black players in the NFL...

Ignore him. We are beginning to think is his intelligence is artificial
Always spell check when you are going to criticize some else's intelligence.

I hate Kelly the coach. I think Kelly the GM might actually be an upgrade.

Why don't I like Kelly the coach? I'd have to go back and look to be sure, but I think his teams in Philly led the league in three and outs, and even if his teams score, they still leave their defenses out on the field way too long over the course of a game, and over the long haul of the entire season. This is a recipe for not having enough juice to run deep into the playoffs, not that this team will make the playoffs with this gimmick offense in the NFCW. Arizona and Seattle are going to go 6-0 against us over the next three years, and we won't be in any of those games.

Additionally, we don't have anything in place to run his scheme. Kaepernick has the running part of a QB that Kelly likes, but Kelly is going to discover how innaccurate his arm is. Additionally, I don't think Kaepernick is smart enough, or willing enough, to learn this offense and run it the way Kelly will want it run. Add in the fact that we're now going to burn the 7th overall pick on a linebacker with a blown up knee (I'm guessing on this one, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least; Baalke is straight up retarded for injured players and projects).

I'm sorry, I just don't see a single positive in this hire. I see three glaring negatives, though.

1). Kelly being hired definitely means we're not drafting a QB at 7, and that sucks, since we're going to waste at least one more season before we address that problem.
2). Kelly being hired just has the feel that our FO can fall back on the, "See, we're not a terrible job. We didn't pick the absolute trash of the trash this year. We had options," routine, and it allows the FO to further ignore reality. If Kelly goes 3-13 (and I don't think he's going to win much more than that with this roster), I think Jed will chalk it up to "Well, he's implementing his system, and it's going to take some time. Kelly will remain, and so will Baalke. If Kelly goes 5-11 in year two, Jed will get all giddy and extend everybody, falsely believing this team is on the right track to get to the SB.
3). Who are the other coaches going to be, and more importantly, who is going to choose them. Jed and Baalke have made some statements that make it seem as though they'll be deciding who the staff is, even if they let Kelly tell the media that these are his guys.

Big time former Eagles Fan here now officially switching allegiances to the 49ers now that they have hired Chip. You guys are going to love this guy. Everything about him is innovative and the Eagles just fired him because he pissed off the owner. Something about prioritizing football over a Christmas party. Dumbest thing ever.

Chip is all football all the time. Don't believe the naysayers. Most of those guys were fired or demoted by Chip. It will be alot of fun. Chip does everything fast. Its an uptempo offense, but its also a run first offense. With Cap and your RBs, it will work very well.
