don't think they are trying to make "less of a joke" about it.

Pretty much will always be a fun weekend wrapped around the event.
Anyone who tunes in on TV to watch a real hockey game is fooling themselves more than anything.
Anyone who thinking it will EVER be a real hockey game is fooling themselves twice.

Sounds to me they are just trying to change things up for the event, have some fun with it.
Don't think anyone really cares about the game at all.

The people that even suggested the MLB thing, deciding home ice for the Cup finals.. need to be castrated, drawn and quartered, and beaten mercilessly with wet spaghetti.

Agree, That format is bullshit the team that earns home ice should get home ice. It should not be determined by a useless exhibition game.

I agree with what Biz said.....It's not a real game....no one thinks it's a real game...it's just something to have fun with....espicially if you are lucky enough to be located near the region where the game is played....it's a spectacle....just have fun with it.....if you wanna get all worked up over a game you still have 80+ chances a year to do that too....

I don't get worked up about it or feel I should, nor do I feel, I suppose, that they're trying to make people take it more seriously; however, I do think they're trying to generate more interest in it. By my previous comment, I meant more that since it is still a joke of a game, I don't think it will generate much more interest. I was more curious to see how people felt about that, if it will generate more interest in that game/weekend. I would have elaborated earlier but I had to run.

I actually like this idea:

The captains of each team will be voted on by the participating players, and those captains and alternate captains will draft their teams as part of a live event

It's like a pickup game where the captains will pick the teams. I would actually watch this event (but I might still skip the actual game).

Who gets picked first OV or Sid? :D

I actually really, really, like this idea. wouldn't it be epic (and i know this would never happen...) if they molded this in with the winter classic? Obviously they wouldn't because that means less money, but it'd be the most epic 'pick up' game ever! :D The question is, goalies on out, or star players first?

And how are they choosing captains??? They should do something like Team Lemieux v. Team Gretzky or something like that.

Dreger: NHL considering full-scale overhaul of All-Star game

Not sure how I feel about this. I don't think it will make the All-Star game any less of a joke.

That concept is a GREAT idea.... for a video game. That's a ridiculous concept in real life though.

Why is the all-star game a "joke" though? I think all around it's the best all-star game in sports - skills competition is fun and interesting, the game itself is always an incredible display of skill even if lacking in defense, and it showcases the sport well with what Americans want to see - lots of goals!

The more I think about it, the more I agree it's ridiculous. Also, it could create resentment between players if the captain picks certain players over others or over his teammates--which may sound childish, but I think it is still realistic.

As for me thinking the game is a "joke," I don't know, I guess I used to enjoy watching it when I was a kid, but every year I get more and more bored with it. No one shows any heart of intensity during it (which I don't think they should or need to, since it does not count for much). Most other people I talk to have said similar things; it just seems no one cares about it much, not even the players.

I still enjoyed the skills competition too until recent years. I know some will disagree with me, but I thought last year's was lame. I didn't find Ovechkin's antics that funny--I wasn't bothered by them; I just didn't find them amusing. I want to see skilled or fancy moves, not silly hats. It's nice to see different sides of players, but I just found it to be uninteresting.

You're a Caps fan!...you dont see enough of them in the regular season?.....I blame Ovechkin....

It does seem a bit "out there' but I don't think I mind this idea at all. Its actually pretty creative and as someone else mentioned the selection process could be an event itself. It could create some pretty unlikely and interesting teammates, Zetterburg and Crosby for example. 2 players from different countries who have each always played for the same team from opposite conferences. You'd also have the potential of regular teammates playing against one another who otherwise wouldn't. As a Sharks fan it would be interesting to see Thornton and Marleau on opposite sides, which could otherwise never happen while both are on the Sharks, including the Olympics.

Yeah I really don't like that gimmick for MLB but I understand the intent of it. They want to make the game more meaningful and in the past in MLB home field never was earned. They simply rotated between leagues from year to year. The reason likely being that until about 15 years ago there was no inter-league play so it wasn't really possible for the champion of one league to earn an advantage over the other. To an extent this is still true as it is in the NHL because the schedules are so much different and we all know the Best is so much toughter than the Least (sorry couldn't resist :D) but despite its imperfection I still like it better than having home-ice/field be decided by an ASG.

I watch everything but the actual game, unless I have absolutely nothing to do, I'll watch it. The skills competition is where its at.

Just out of curiosity, did anyone actually read anywhere that the NHL was considering using the ASG to determine home ice in the Cup Finals? Or did the comments just happen to drift over to that MLB travesty?

Personally, I don't really watch the All-Star game. I'm just not interested by it... to me, the All-Star game is all about attracting new fans, and providing entertainment for those who are interested in that sort of thing. For the 8 or 12 year old kid living in North Carolina, it's awesome for him to be able to go and see Crosby, Ovechkin, Stamkos, Toews, and Datsyuk all on the same sheet of ice. Whatever they want to do with it, is fine.

I do think that the captains shouldn't get to draft their players. They should have all the players throw their sticks in center ice, and one guy closes his eyes and separates them to decide teams.

i kind of like the idea. its not like it's going to make any of us watch less hockey, but if it has potential to draw in new fans than i welcome anything they think will help.

I think it would be even cooler if they did it the way we did it as kids and just dump all the sticks in a pile at center ice. Toss one stick to the left, then to the right, etc. and let the players find their sticks and pick their teams as a result.
