If you beat a team...but that team recently lost to another team...you get no land out of it.

It's like looting the Best Buy after a hurricane. Only the first looters get the big screen TV's.

It's like a championship belt. You beat a team you get their land. If they have no land, you get nothing. Start the season, the county goes to the closest FBS team.

Why wouldn't the National Champion control the entire map?

That could only happen if every team with land went into a playoff. They don't.

This type of data map is just for fun and has no real relevancy and it seems a lot of people up here struggle to see it that way.

There will be teams that own land on this map that don't reach a bowl even, more or less reach the playoffs. So it's still possible for your team to have something at the end of the year.
