I haven't heard anything about a NMC, but you can't really complain about a 5.27 cap hit. Carter obviously wanted to stay in Philadelphia - that is the definition of a hometown discount (especially when David Backes signs for 4.5 the day before).

I know everyone hates Carter right now, but this is a great deal. You can rag on him all you want for whatever reason. It doesn't change the fact that he's technically on pace for 41 goals this season, which would make just about all of us happy.

You won't find a 40 goal scorer at this price anywhere in the Nhl. All of the 40+ goal scorers from last year make huge money except for Stamkos, who is still currently in the final year of his entry level contract. The others (Crosby, Ovechkin, Marleau, Gaborik, Kovalchuk and Semin) make an average of $7.55 million per.

I absolutely agree that $5.27 million is a steal, even for a guy who has yet to dominate in the playoffs. I am sure he will sooner rather than later.

This is what getting to the Stanley Cup Finals and fielding a team that should be favored to get there again now and in the near future gets you. Players want to play for our team. They'll take less to stay and have a chance to win Cups with a great organization. The future is bright for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Like Mav just said, no matter how you look at this, its a steal. Even if he doesnt keep pace to 40+ goals, I will gladly pay 5.3 million for a 35 goal scorer. Maybe getting the contract will allow Jeff to play loose and similar to what we saw last game haha

THese decade long deals are crazy, but that is how the NHL works now... And he will still be in his mid-30's by the end of it. No reason Carter can't still be decent by 35 or 36. As for the cap moving forward, I would be real worried if I were JVR. WIth Carter, Richards, and Briere signed long term and producing and with GIroux and Leino playing well and getting extended, he is quickly the tradeable guy. Maybe Leighton too for some cap space next year. YOu can get cheaper backups than him if you are looking to save a few bucks. Lsoing those two would pretty much account for any raise Leino will get. That gives the Flyers about 2 million to sign a backup goalie, 2 forwards, and a defenseman, and we are way, way off from worrying too much about that. THe Pens have only about 500K more room, and will have 10 open roster spots...

The cap is suppose to increase 3-5 million next season. I think Leino will be resigned in the offseason

Here's a quote from Panaccio in regards to a NTC/NMC in Carter's new deal:

"Carter can give the Flyers a list of 10 teams he won’t accept a trade with, a source said. The no-trade begins 2012-13 and runs for three years. Then it is modified for the balance of the contract."
