There are two kinds of unnamed sources. The kind you are talking about dad where someone throws some junk out there to get a story and if it doesn't happen they backtrack or just keep on going they didn't make the crap up.

Dianna Russini was laughed at on some of her unnamed sources when she was still a local sports reporter. She ended up being right almost every time. I don't ignore her unnamed sources because people tell her things because when they tell her "X is going to happen but you can't link it to me" she doesn't tell. That's old time reporting, good hustling on her part and I would go to war with someone like that.
