trade 3rd in 2011 and Jake Hauswirth to FLA for defenseman Dennis Wideman.

Does make you wonder about Green. Wideman has another year on his contract and the Caps really need help up the middle more than D-depth. They have 7 guys signed through next year (one-way). Another deal to come?

Woah. 3.9mil?! For another year?! Not so sure about this move anymore. Didn't give up much, but unless they have another move it's confusing.

By adding Wideman, the Caps are now $57,802 over the cap.

The Caps may have defense depth and needs at center, but they don't really have anyone on the blue line who can consistently feed Green and provide offense.

i've watched a lot of caps games the past couple months.. they are very confusing.. they need help scoring more so than on d.. and to be over the cap now?

i think semin's gotta be on the move, but where and for who is a big question, especially since they need help up front

I think guys like Erskine, Shultz, Alzner, and Hannan are having trouble providing puck movement for the forwards... this move helps that problem. I do think they still need a good center for the number two slot.

The issue in my mind is that they still need a center and may need to take on salary to get him, but instead they took on a lot of money to get a depth D. Sure it will help offense from the back line, but it would seem to me that a bigger issue is up front. That and Wideman is signed through next year. They are D heavy next year. Capgeek is down. Shoot. Can't back that up with anything but twitter references. Based on this you'd think Semin is moving, but the teams that can take him on are few (LAK?).

I can see Semin moved for a center at some point, I'm just not sure who's available right now.

That is Nylander money from next year. He comes off the books, finally.... Also I see it more as a replacement for Poti than Green this year. Green is a lot closer to coming back. i also think this indicates a possible Semin move.

Riiiiight. Forgot about Nylander. So it's not a killer money contract for next season, just forces a move today as well as creating a bit of a log jam on D.

Okay, Capgeek is back. The logjam I was referring to was this:
Green, Poti, Wideman, Schultz, Erskine, Carlson, Sloan all signed through next year on one way deals. Alzner is an RFA after this season who's probably up for a little bit of a raise (right? he's at 1.675 now), and Hannan is a UFA. So, that's a lot of guys. I guess it's more of an offseason decision than anything.

Good ol' NHLSourcesSay says a deal between WASH and Arnott is all but done. Uh, more money? They have to trade away a lot of money.

Green is out 1-2 weeks. Hardly enough to make a move for a $4M D-man. I love their D depth now, but their options up front are pretty top heavy.

Remember this is all prorated. The banked A TON by not making any free agency moves and starting the season like 6 mil below.

Yeah, but you need to trade a salary of at least 200k off to get under the cap, so getting Arnott would mean you have to trade away at least that much in salary+200k. 200k is nothing really, but still gotta move someone.
