Can't ANYBODY pitch a Complete Game?

I was so pumped up watching the Tigers last night.

The team has been in the league since 1901, and no pitcher on the club had EVER struck out 17 batters in a 9 inning game until last night.

Anibal Sanchez was filthy nasty. He struck out the side in the eighth inning to make it 17 Ks. I was pumped to see him try to strike out the side again in the 9th inning, which would have tied the major league record set by Roger Clemens and equaled by Kerry Wood.

But out he goes and in comes the relief pitcher.

Yes, his pitch count was somewhere north of 120. Yes the game was clearly over at 10-0.

But c'mon. There is so much money wrapped up in the modern players that they are babied because the slightest risk of injury can affect a multi-million dollar investment.

So, I get it. But it sucks. Mickey Lolich would regularly complete 25 starts a year. Now that number equals the total for an entire league in a given year.

What a drag...

Seriously, it sucks when that happens. Kind of takes all the fun out of for the fans. It's like ripping the last chapter out of a book.

I was complaining about pitchers not completing games several years ago. I guess with all the elbow injuries and the fact that these guys are throwing the ball so hard nowadays it is better for them to come out early.

your wishing for something that wont really happen in our lifetime for several reasons

1. the money...its absolutely batshit crazy what they pay even shitty pitchers

2. the players union...if we eliminated the need for specialists in the bullpen the union would go apeshit because it eliminates jobs.

3. expansion....too many teams leave too few quality arms...teams tend to baby arms anymore because they are in short supply(at least quality ones)

4. managers...they play numbers way too much these days...save for ozzie guillen when the white sox won the world series every manger is stroking his dong about every match up past the 6th inning

There's not a more empty and worthless stat than complete games. Goal of a SP is to get 6 or 7 good innings and let the bullpen take over

As a Mets fan, I feel your pain. Nothing like having a pitcher throw 6 or 7 solid innings only to have some nobody who has no business being in the bigs impolde in the later innings.

Wasn't there a study that suggested that every pitch over 120 was more damaging or something?
