I understand the only shot Iowa has at the Big Dance is to win conference tournament, but I have no understanding how the NIT works.

Both are going to be difficult to do.
NCAA would require winning out to finish 10-8 in conference and probably another win in the BTT.

NIT might be as hard. The small conference regular season champs who don't win their tourney are automatically in the NIT. That only leaves ~20 spots.

We'll see. I just hope we go somewhere so Gatens has a chance to continue.

The NIT doesnt take teams that dont finish at least .500 in conference so job 1 is to beat NW otherwise there is NO shot. NIT is tough to get into because they are forced to take all D1 conference winners that dont win their conference tourney or make the NCAA as an at large. So really Iowas best hope is to have most if not all the favorites win their tourneys ( if they are from 1 bid leagues) and then to win the NW game and AT LEAST 1 more IMO. 3 more wins gets them in for sure I think.

I was super happy to see they made it especially since Barta said no to the CBI. I guess the NIT changed their rules on teams under .500 in conference last year so that helped for sure. Iowa was the last at large into the NIT field so looks like we can thank the NCAA tourney for giving Iona a bid since that made it possible for us to sneak into the NIT :)
