The speculation is they thought he could maybe rehab it and the rehab wasn't going as well as they thought and so they reached a breaking point where they had to get to surgery if they were hoping for him to be ready by the season started.

Seems like more and more athletes at every sport are waiting longer and longer for surgery. Perhaps they are scared it might got botched and not be able to play again?

It was put off due to a prior commitment. If I had to guess it is the show for kids he does on Nickelodeon called All In. I am sure the Panthers are lined up on this. In this situation he is Damned if he does and Damned if he doesn't.
I applaud him for sticking to his commitments, particularly if it is for kids.

All depends on the level of damage in the shoulder. Sounds like it was a partial tear so may not be as serious but then again any time you are messing with the throwing shoulder of a QB it should be considered a big deal. And it does sound like they had a plan to try and rehab it but when they got into the throwing stage of the plan the pain increased leaving them no choice at this point but surgery.
