One thing a lot of people forget is that the Pats' offensive line is composed almost entirely of mid to late round draft choices and undrafted free agents. The lone exception is Nate Solder, who was a 1st rounder. I feel that, to truly get a solid offensive line, we need a high draft choice and one or more top free agent veterans. For years, Scar has taken ground round and turned it into filet mignon. If the regulars are ground round, then the reserves are probably chuck roast and you don't win championships with chuck roast. The food euphemisms have made me hungry, so excuse while I get something to eat.

you have a valid point. However isn't it the coaches job to get the best out of said players? Cannon and Flemming would have been cut at any pee wee league playing like that

Food comparisons are an excellent example. Top chefs can make incredible dishes from average components.
But..............the greatest Chef cannot make shit palatable.

Or as my wife would say................the Patriots are trying to polish a turd.

All good points in this thread. I would add that BB and his uncanny ability to draft/sign players with prior injuries is getting a little old.

Regardless of who takes over the offensive line (I hope it's Brian Daboll), unless BB adds some quality players to the mix, the results may unfortunately be the same as they were this season.

I don't think it's all doom and gloom? If Solder returns healthy he and Vollmer have been able to handle the T positions. The rookie Centers are up and coming. Tre Jackson and Shaq Mason can likely handle the G position if healthy plua an entire off season to work at it. Yep need to get some veteran OLmen not sure there will be any in the draft considering the first pick will be late 2nd round. Not saying you can't find one but I'd rather see a big WR with this pick. Especially if he can return kicks. That or a punishing style DB.

Definitely not "doom and gloom" The O-line was not bad when healthy. Tough finish to the year would not have been quite as tough if the O-line coaching was better......

The problem is that this line cannot stay healthy. The past couple of years have forced the Patriots to make changes that have put guys into positions they never play. That's not their fault, it's BB's. The reality of NFL football is that you must have bodies to back up the starters. You have 11 offense, 11 defense, a Punter and a kicker. Double the offense and defense and that's 44 players, add the lickers and you have 46. Add 7 and that's the 53 man roster of which you can suit up 48 every week. Whay is it that the Patriots only carry one RT and one LT? The math isn't that difficult.

The critical thing in 2016 is to insure that there are quality backups for the offensive line to make sure that Brady is protected. After that, this team absolutely needs a tall, fast WR who plays outside the numbers. The final piece is a running back in the mold of Curtis Martin, between 6" and 6'2" about 215 lbs who can run with some power and speed and catch the ball. Everything else is in place.

Getting Solder back at full strength and returning Vollmer to the right side will certainly help. However, both of these starters have had recurring injuries over the past few years that have taken their toll. IMHO, BB needs to sign at least one veteran offensive tackle in the off season and make a young left tackle a top draft choice.

Rumor mill is running full steam that Dante may be back next year.
If so, I hope he has been watching some college ball and been in contact with the scouts.

Scar has always had an excellent reputation as a judge of college talent. I think he was responsible for uncovering talents like Dave Andrews, Shaq Mason and Brian Stork. The Pats definitely need an improvement in the talent along the O line.

Left Tackles were at a premium in the draft last year. I suspect the only way to get a great left tackle this year is to develop one.
The entire line has been having recurring injuries. We were doing very well (10-0) while rotating players on the line. After the injuries, we no longer had enough depth to rotate. Guys that can play 75% of the snaps on the O-line are becoming increasingly rare.....

I've posted an article a few times but if you look at the drafts since 2011 when the new CBA happened it is about down right impossible to find a guy in the draft that can come in day 1 and do well. There is just not enough contact practices to get a guy up to speed with all that he will be facing. When you throw in that college focuses less and less on good technique you are talking about having to not only get this guy up to speed with a brand new offense but completely rebuild him from the ground up technique wise. A lot of teams are starting to go more towards taking that midround guy in the hopes of having him on the bench for a year or two then trying to get him into the lineup. So if the team is looking for a new Tackle I would say FA honestly is the better way to go if you are wanting to see instant results.

Totally agree.
