Prediction:

Play 1: Three yard out pattern - Complete and out of bounds.
Play 2: Mixon for 1.5 yards.
Play 3: Three step drop, throw to sideline to Higgins. Contested and incomplete.

Day over for Burrow. No chances for pressure.

You are likely right. To be honest, I've never understood this approach. If he's going to get hurt, he's going to get hurt. He needs live reps to get ready for the regular season. I'll argue that putting him out there with limited, to no, true live reps for a regular season game where other players have played all, or part, of 3 practice games puts him at greater risk for injury.

Hell, start Allen and the backup OL - then bring in the starters later in the 1st qtr or 2nd qtr and allow them to face the other teams 2nd/3rd defense. Get some live bullets but not at the highest level. Could have done that this past week, and then maybe even started him this week. It just doesn't make much sense to me....other than to be able to say he was re-injured in a "real" game vs a practice game, there's no other logical reason for him not to get live reps unless he's truly not ready. In that case, he's just not ready.

There’s no way Mixon gains yardage

Yeah.... I was being fairly optimistic. A real Bengals drive will look like this.

1st and 10 - False Start, Riley Reiff.
1st and 15 - Wide receiver screen to Jabar Chase. Dropped. Incomplete.
2nd and 15 - 8 yard run by Joe Mixon. Holding down field on Tyler Boyd.
2nd and 23 - Wide receiver screen to Tee Higgins for 8 yards..
3rd and 15 - Draw for 3 yards to Chris Evans.

Punt.

Another thing I was telling my wife the other night while watching the game. If Burrow at least has his first stringers in around him protecting, then put him out there. He is not going through the season unhit just because it is regular season versus preseason. It would probably actually be better for his confidence to get those first couple hits out of the way in preseason before the regular season hits. If he is going to break t hat easy anyways, then you can't count on him to carry you through the season. I think they should have treated him like a regular starting QB during this preseason. one or two drives in week 1. First quarter, maybe partial second in week 2. Week 3, a series or two. Then be done.

I'm okay with the idea of not playing him in preseason with the idea being that it's a bunch of extra weeks of no contact on the knee. I understand he has been cleared and all that, but even the coaching staff said he still has rehab issues to tend to. The halfway bullshit just seems silly. If he's really coming in just to hand the ball off and throw a screen, what is the point exactly?

If the knee isn't ready to take hits - then he's not ready for the regular season. Another week, or two, of non-contact football isn't going to change that.

That's my biggest gripe. He needs to get hit. His knee isn't suddenly and magically more protected, or better, just because the game is a regular season game vs a practice game.

If the knee really needs the extra time to be ready, then IMO, you start Allen for weeks 1 and 2. I would want Burrow practicing at full capacity for at least 2 weeks before getting him out there if he's not going to face any real live reps in the pre-season.

This reeks of optics to me. The Bengals are half ass rushing things. Trying to sell that Burrow is fine. Assuring the fanbase that all is well we totally didn’t break the franchise QB. Please come spend money.

The reality is Burrow is 9 months removed from a total knee reconstruction. Likely still isn’t completely recovered. And is being cased in bubble wrap for Week 1. Throwing him out there for meaningless reps in the final preseason where we won’t get hit and will little to no live pressure, isn’t preparing him for anything, or helping his confidence in the knee.

Hopkins is even playing, who is a much bigger dude, 6 less weeks of healing, and plays in the trenches where guys are bull rushing him, he is having to maintain strength and balance and guys falling all around his legs.

Sounds like Miami is resting starters. This sets up well for success.

In other news, Bengals FA legend Trae Waynes is hurt yet again. Remember him? Opposite hamstring from the one he hurt at the beginning of camp.

Zac Taylor says Week 1 is “in question”. Which in Bengalland means go ahead and assume the worst and that he’s dead.

He's been a real steal for us.

What we got
1. Jet sweep to Tyler Boyd for 3 yards
2. Jamarr Chase drops a screen pass, Riley Reiff gets a 15 yard penalty
3. Joe Mixon carry for five yards.

Adios. At least we got a Chase drop in there. What's most hilarious is Penei Sewell has also sucked, so the debate over who they should have drafted is as pure Bengal as it gets.

Its also funny that the other team involved is the Lions. I'm sure if these two guys went to 2 other franchises (aside from the Jets maybe), everything would be fine right now.

On the bright side, it looks like we picked up an absolute weapon in Evan McPherson - Though I'm fully expecting him to miss a 25 yarder on his first attempt in 2 weeks.

Also got a potential steal in Chris Evans. And maybe some decent value in D'Ante Smith.

I think Chase will be just fine. Burrow is a good enough leader and friend he will direct him out of that, and until Chase is ready to start doing what he needs to, we have Auden tate as our 3rd WR. I have a feeling Chase will "catch on" eventually. *wink* Preemptive strike to Geoff Hobson's article he will be putting out 3 weeks into the season.

I think I was spot-on for play 2.

This of course raises a larger point.... Here you have a WR that is struggling with drops and is especially struggling when in traffic. So, the way you fix him is to throw a wide receiver screen that everyone in the stadium knows is coming? I mean, the Dolphins corners were all over that play - ready to blow it up. Chase should have caught the ball, but he wasn't going anywhere anyway and it wasn't the best situation for him.

With everyone knowing Burrow was only going to be in for 3-4 plays, at most, and everyone knew they were going to run plays to keep him protected, they actually put at risk other players. That screen is a prime example. If they weren't going to let him run a few "normal" plays for 3-4-5 plays, then don't play him at all.

This isn't just a Bengals thing, but the way teams in general treat players like this to get reps is just flat out counter productive and silly.

Totally agree.... The Bengals coaches have even admitted to running very scripted plays for certain players. This puts guys at risk. Sometimes I think the current coaching staff is in-step with modern trends in the NFL, but they do quite a bit of head-scratching things that make them look like amateurs. The Burrow situation yesterday was a prime example - I can't imagine how anyone thinks those three plays helped in anyway. And the Chase incompletion turned dangerous pretty quick.

Another issue with yesterday's game - going for 2 late.

I just don't really get it because if the other team scores, then you are only down 1. Two if they go for 2pt conversion, which would be unlikely since it wouldn't have done anything to prevent a FG from winning the game.

Then, they could have had a real live practice scenario of the rookie K lining up to win a game.

This kind of head scratching decision has been all to common under the current staff, and previous, but not limited to just the Bengals. Coaches work really hard to be the smartest person in the room, and usually fail at this task for some reason.
