Redskins Recent Drafts Boost Talent Level

the first part of this article is really interesting , here are the stats

60% of all NFL starters are drafted in the 1st 3 rounds we have failed in the past because we didnt have these picks (excluding 1st rounders ) and when we did we chose poorly

the RG3 trade cost us potentially 4 high end starters which is one reason i opposed the trade . true i backed Rg3 when the deed was done and defended him until you simply couldnt anymore but that trade was the epitome of frustration for the fans .

26% of starters in the NFL are from rounds 4-7 . now a lot of people ask why do we stock up on late round picks or dismiss that in a trade . the fact is you have a chance to draft 1 guy out of those rounds who develops into a starter within 4 years

14% of all nfl starters are UDRFA's . so some of the hype about our rookie FA's is justified . 1 in 10 a year could develop into a starter

in fact a UDRFA has a better chance the a 4th rounder 11% , 5th 6.5% . 6th 6% 7th 4%

now what SMGM has done as well is what most of us here have advocated . he has been thrifty in FA avoiding FA's over age 28 to big contracts . most are very well priced , below 28 (some are older but not so much )

this is why we should have some hope around here , this team in a few years could be among the best if we are patient

NFL.com Draft 2016 - NFL Draft History: Full Draft Year

Totally agree. For just about any team the draft is the key & teams should try to build inhouse like the Pats, Packers & Panthers.

As a reminder - take a look at the Redskins draft history. You can't really make any judgements on the current draft since none of those players have taken a single snap yet in the NFL. However - the initial draft by SM includes 3 major contributors, 1 on the fence & several others who could make major contributions in the next few years. Not bad.

The 2014 draft also was not too bad. Before that - yikes! 2013 - one major contributor still around. 2012 - Cousins & perhaps Leribeus. 2011 - Kerrigan & Paul. 2 players left from 2009-2010 drafts. 2008 - complete disaster! Only 1 player each drafted in rds 1-4 of the 2006 & 2007 draft. 2005 draft - meh... 2004 draft stands out because of Taylor & Cooley but resulted in nobody else. 2003 draft - laughable & 2001 and 2002 drafts were not much better. It goes on & on & on.

A handful of halfway decent drafts prior to SM but overall perhaps the worst draft history of any team in the NFL (the pre-Snyder ones were not much better & worse in some cases).

I think one of the really big keys is that 40% of your team comes from the 4th round or later or were UDFAs. The 1st three rounds are important, but you will struggle without that other 40%. Guys like McCloughan succeed because they are good in the later rounds and finding UDFAs.

Because of injury, salary, younger and better players teams turn a major part of their roster over dramatically in a 5 year span. Competition should be the name of the game. In competitive sport you should always be looking to find younger, better and cheaper players. I hope SM is here a long time. I was really happy with the way Gruden ran the team last year also. Go Skins!!
