Actually for no hitters the last one was Cordova/Rincon in the 10 inning game where Mark Smith hit the HR to win it.

Prior to that it was the Candy man and how can any forget the stories of Doc Ellis on LSD pitching the No hitter. And correct me if I am wrong but I thought Bob Moose had one also.

A few facts and clarifications about Pirate no-hitters

- There have been six no-hitters thrown by Pirate pitchers.

- Harvey Haddix pitched 12 perfect innings against the Braves in the late 50's before losing the perfect game on an error by Don Hoak, and then he lost the no-hitter and the game. This game is NOT considered a no-hitter by MLB because Haddix gave up a hit in the 13th inning. (I listened to that game on the radio.)

2nd. Cliff Chambers pitched a no-hitter for the Pirates in the early 50's..... and I remember the announcers saying that it was the second no-hitter ever by a Pirate pitcher. (I listened to the Chambers game on the radio, as well.)

1st. The "original" Pirate no-hitter was thrown by Nick Maddox in 1907. (I looked it up.)

3rd & 4th. Bob Moose and Dock Ellis threw no-hitters for the Pirates in consecutive seasons in 1969 and 1970..... and yeah, Ellis claimed to be under the influence of LSD when he pitched that game.

5th. John Candelaria pitched his no-hitter in the mid 70's.

6th. The most recent Pirate no-hitter was a combined effort by Francisco Cordova and Ricardo Rincon, over 10 innings in 1997. Rincon subsequently was traded one-for-one for Brian Giles.

- Although the Pirates lost the Haddix game..... they won all 6 of the "official" no hitters by their pitchers.

Maybe not protection so much as bunching the people that are actually being productive together, since at any given time there are no more than 3 and possibly 4. It just seems easier to score runs when you put productive people together.

It is hard to lose an "official" no-hitter, not impossible, since it has been done, but very hard.

Haddix lost his perfect game in the 13th on a throwing error by Don Hoak. He lost his no hitter in the same inning on a three run home run by Joe Adcock that was latter ruled a single.
Francisco Cordova and Ricardo Rincon combined for the no hitter in the 90s.
