Not even close, this could get very ugly very quickly. Isn't he hitting slightly below average in the same league Brad Eldred was owning?

He hit well in the Arizona Fall League this year, but he didn't hit in AA and he isn't hitting in AAA, and he isn't 20 yet. I don't see the need to rush him.

1/3 against Billingsley so far with two hard hit balls and a groundout. Not too bad for a short notice call up.

One game does not mean he is ready though. There is still plenty for him to work on. Would hate to see him get off slow and not be able to recover. He has the chance to be great, so if he only ends up as good, then this callup will be a loss.

It really is irrelevant how he did last night. The fact he hasn't hit well since A-ball, and there was no need to rush him. There were other guys in AAA who were more deserving.

The teams offense is in dire straits right now with the injuries. Harper does not seem like the kind of kid to me who will get emotionally scarred. It was a late enough callup that it does not count as a year. he did well in the Spring. Why not give him a shot. If he hits well, it may spark him up when he goes back down. Hell, if he hits well enough, he may not go back down. The team is pitching spectacularly right now and the guys know him pretty well. I don't see a risk here, but I am also looking through red, white and blue glasses.

What if he doesn't hit?

What if he doesn't hit?

Then he works on it. I guess that I don't understand the supposed fragile psyche of a baseball player, but I never played, When I played hockey and didn't score, I figured it out. When I played football , and I gave up a touchdown, I had to move past it for the next play. It may be a baseball thing.

Baseball is certainly different, hockey and football are played with much more emotion, and less precision.

Anyway, I don't think he has a fragile cycle, I just find it stupid on all accounts to bring up a 19 year old, who hasn't hit well since A-ball, to essentially "save the offense." There were better players on the AAA roster to help the Nats tomorrow.

If Harper OPS .700 over an extended period, I'll be surprised.

Football players have to have short memories or they get scored on every play, or they continually fumble or drop passes. Baseball players are different, they are slaves to habits. Wade Boggs ate fried chicken before EVERY game he played, because in the minors he was in a slump had it before one game and went 4 for 4. Baseball players never forget. So if he goes 0 for 4 with 3 k's, he will remember the next day. String a few bad games in a row lime that and they start pressing, trying too hard and just making it worse.

I am by no way saying that any of this will happen, just saying it goes that way sometimes.

Lets take the Pirates as an example, last year after 100 games we were in first place in the NL Central. One bad call in a marathon game in Atlanta seems small in nature, but in reality, this team was playing above thier heads to try to break a string of 18 consecutive losing seasons. That one call ended up leading to 9 more losses in a row, and by the time it got out of their heads it was the beginning of the 2012 season and they had an epic colapse to tje end of last season.
