It wasn't meant to penalize the Patriots. Essentially it was supposed to be more like that of college football when getting a 1st down that the clock doesn't start until the refs blow the whistle. The Patriots just didn't quite know the rule and it cost them a few seconds.

Yeah the refs could have definitely done a better job of communicating the situation because it isn't one that comes up very often. I'm not sure I have ever seen it. Not sure it changed a whole lot of the game though as the Pats still made the field goal. Maybe they have a try at the end zone to win the game but otherwise I just don't see that as having been a huge deciding factor since they made the field goal. Now if he misses that field goal then yeah I think they have a major grievance in that situation.

it did eat a few minutes off the clock which made Brady rush a play and who knows if they could have gotten down farther and possibly gotten a td instead of sending it to overtime

I think Osweiler will be pretty good. The Broncos should sign him to a cheap 2 or 3 year deal and see what they have before they ditch him.

I still think it's likely he'll stay and will develop into a great QB for Denver, but it's not as certain now. I'm a little worried that after this benching, he might consider signing elsewhere. He's shown enough talent that teams will be very interested.
