He makes some great points. And honestly, if the GM does their homework, being at those events would be fine. But regardless of where he was both last year and this year, they wouldn't have gotten those big names they sought. Maybe it's because they haven't been bad enough...sure Edmonton has been rough, but look at the crop of talent that's assembling. It's getting close. And you have to think it's closer than Toronto.

I dont care where my GM is as long as he is doing his job. Its no surprise that he doesnt make huge splashes at the deadline but almost every year for him its the same. maybe he NEEDS to make that splash

Exactly. It's very true that a lot of mistakes are made on the big names on July 1st, but...what exactly IS he doing? If he's not going to do that what's his plan? I don't seem to see a plan.

Let me put it this way: maybe I don't know enough to judge their farm system, but when the Staal trade rumors began and most knew that Toronto was a suitor, I knew there was NOTHING I wanted from them for Staal.

Gardnier might be their best prospect. Kadri seems a bust or not used properly and Schenn was a distant second. I dont know it well enough also but its not very good from all points I have seen in games and in articles/media

I can't see him lasting the season if he doesnt have a decent one with not only a playoff spot but a 2nd round appearance as well.

had the same thought when TO was supposed to be a Luongo destination.
I like Matt Frattin and Jake Gardiner. that's it.

Phil Kessel is a nice player, but he's not the kind of player that you can build a team around and Burke gave up way too much for him to the Bruins. Same goes for Dion Phaneuf (biggest mistake was naming him captain). Drafting Kadri high in the first round was a mistake as well (he showed the type of character he has playing for Canada at the World Juniors tourney).

Difficult to recover from those types of errors.

Didn't their farm team goto the Calder Cup finals? Wouldn't that suggest they have some talent in their system? Or were they lead by a bunch of has beens as opposed to young talent?

Never really been a Burke fan but I think it's cool that he decided to take part in the parade to honour his son.

and if anyone blasts Leaf fans for being mad at burke not being in the "war" room and at the parade are not being fair. its mostly media saying he's there for his son. yes they understand that very much. but they pay the most money in the league for that team. they deserve every bit of attention. just make sure that is being done no matter where he is. it just doesnt seem it is being done

Burkie likes those Americans and could have picked either Nick Leddy or Chris Krieder (who went later in the 1st round).

/just sayin'

Im of the mind that just because you make finals doenst make you have a great farm. great team system? great run? lots of factors. How bout them Oilers in 2006? that was NOT a great team. but man they had a great run and had a lot of luck to get there.

When you've got nothing, you rebuild - from the bottom up. Scouts, director of player personel, then get rid of the coach and gm. Trade away NHL bodies for draft picks - unfortunately, the Leafs cupboard is pretty barren at both the developmental level and at the NHL level.

How time consuming would the parade be anyway? Serious question since I have no idea. Would it just be a few hours or is it pretty much a day long event?

When your head is floating 150' in the air and being pulled along by seventeen guys with ropes, it's a pretty time consuming event.

Burke’s Idleness Way Too Convenient Berger Bytes

“We make more mistakes at the trade deadline than we make the whole rest of the year combined,” Burke said during a recent media conference call. - CBC Sports, Feb. 14, 2008.

As Toronto GM Brian Burke is fond of pointing out (and obligingly did so on a conference call last week), GMs make more mistakes on this day than the rest of the year combined. - Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated, Mar. 5, 2009.

“ we make more mistakes at the deadline than during the rest of the year,” Burke said. - Lance Hornby, Toronto Sun, Jan. 25, 2010.

“I believe our group (NHL GMs) makes more mistakes on July 1 than we do all the rest of the year combined,” said Burke. - Kevin McGran, Toronto Star, July 1, 2012.

lol. in terms of trading.... isn't it largely a zero sum game?
for every 'bad trade', doesn't that mean the other side made a 'good trade'?
why is he seemingly afraid to be involved in that?

I liked this line in the article:

As a result, Burke’s “I-have-no-patience-for-a-five-year-plan” has very likely put the Leafs in a ten-year plan

Ouch.
