compounding this ... what about Garrison ... he could have peeled off and stepped right into hossas sternum, laid him out and ended his night even earlier

He was getting ripped pretty good during the 2nd period intermission by Price and Paterson on Team 1040.

Don't care one way or the other, just thought refs in CHI-VAN game made two cowardly, homer calls. Hansen/Hossa one of them, long after fact

Cam Cole ‏@rcamcole
CHI-VAN refs made the call based on the injury, not the foul. So, NHL/Shanny will probably do the same. Scary that Hossa so fragile, tho.

I'm surprised Hansen got away with this official abuse (and it makes me wonder if it will have any impact in today's hearing).

the Hansen "hit" I somewhat liken to what the QMJHL player did breaking his opponents jaw while trying to pull his stick out as it was stuck in the seamed glass panels

unintended consequence in my book ... how can you say what Hansen did was intentional ... is trying to catch a puck with a raised arm a dirty play now? :noidea: i say they fine hansen $9874.24 for the "hit"

and how about the officials not calling a penalty until Toews came and cried to them

I don't know, when I put my hand up to catch the elbow doesn't come up with it like that.

2 second mark ... puck up in the air coming in their direction and both Hansen and Hossa have their elbows bent exactly the same way trying to catch it ... reflexive action on both of their parts as they both look to catch the puck

and almost perfect symetry/synchronization too

hansen hits Hossa in the back causing his elbow/forearm to go sideways

Sadly people don't realize Hansen is an accomplished Street Fighter player and was just trying to live his dream of landing a real Shoryuken

Man I hate that. I didn't see this but I hate when players, usually star players, can talk the refs into a penalty. I hate it in hockey and I hate it in the NFL.

I don't really like the hit last night, not that I am sure it was intentional. However don't some players have to be accountable for the actions on the ice, if their recklessness or carelessness causes a injury to another player?*

is it reckless to try and catch a puck? i chalk this up to a collision that possibly happens 2 to 3 times every game ... only this time the contact hit the head and the head was already mush before

I dont know, my post was more about making fun of Shanahan's statements and seemingly varying punishments, but it was his predecessor who used that comment for one player (Ovechkin) but did not discipline others for 'accidental' instances.

It's a fast, competitive game played by large men who frequently collide into each other. I don't think Hansen was any more reckless or careless than Cooke on Karlsson, it was just a hockey play with an unfortunate ending. Hansen may get fined, but I don't see any suspension arising out of this incident.

As far as I can remember Hansen has zero history with supplementary discipline. Should be a fine (at most).

Fraser: Breaking down the Hansen-Hossa incident

I do not believe that there was any deliberate or malicious intent on the part of Jannik Hansen to hit Marian Hossa in the head as both players went up for an airborne puck that had been flipped out of the Hawks zone by Jonathan Toews. The resulting contact to the back of Hossa's head was not worthy of anything beyond the minor penalty for roughing that was eventually assessed by the referees; albeit well after play was whistled dead for the Hossa injury.

Both Hansen and Hossa reacted to the approaching puck similar to a jump ball on the Bulls' homecourt in the United Center. Both players went up for the puck and in doing so, Hossa slid his body position to the right while Hansen moved to the left. Their focus and intent was gaining puck possession.

The movement of both players put them on a collision course as Hossa had the lead lane and the advantage to contact the puck first. From the back side position, Hansen would have to extend his reach over and past Hossa if he were to be successful in playing the puck. In real time and from a deficient position, Hansen's follow-through contacted the back of Hossa's head as both players moved toward one another and reached for the puck.

The roughing penalty (while justified) was arrived at after the fact because of some residual sensitivity surrounding a missed Raffi Torres headshot on Hossa last year in the playoffs which resulted in a 25-game suspension.

With Hossa laying in almost the same spot on the ice, it was imperative that the officials put their heads together to determine how 'Hoss' got there. The correct call was made on the ice.

It remains to be seen if any residual sensitivity will carry over into Hansen's hearing scheduled for this afternoon with the Department of Player Safety.

Stranger things have happened but I would be surprised if Hansen receives a suspension on this play. I have seen far worse hits that have gone unpunished this season.

so now "residual sensitivity" is the basis of calling penalties and suspensions :L
