Of course it could all be legit but you have to wonder. 3 linebackers from same team? Close friends. All 3 still playing at high level. Is this just a "retirement plan" to leave a team in total dissaray and get the hell out of Dodge? Somehow I have this feeling we`ll see these guys resurface in 2016. Just a post cause nothing else really going on lately:)

To what end? If I undestand correctly, the 49ers will still own them if they came out of retirement. So you sacrifice a year of pay to comeback right where you were?

I have heard Patrick Willis is engaged in other things and it would not be surprising that he would like to pursue them now. He has money. He is coming back from injury which may have allowed him to really examine if football was right for him.

Hmnn... I was under they impression if you retired, you had to sit out a yr but then could sign with another team with compensation to prev team

With retirement if you were still under contract with another team then you are still considered under that contract. If they allowed players to do that then you would see a lot more especially those that are Franchise Tagged to then retire for a year so they don't risk injury then come back to the open market. The NFL doesn't want that happening so they keep those contracts alive and well even 5 years after retirement.

LOL Just noticed that this a "game thread"! Maybe cdumler can use his mod powers to fix that.

I realize that CD thus the "compensation" remark at end of post. Boreland wouldn`t be the first guy that came out of retirement and ( using this situation as example) had his agent contact the 49ers expressing his client wanting to comeback but has no desire to play with 49ers. So they reach out to other teams to see if they can work out trade, draft pks or cash for Boreland. Yeah they could play hard ball with him but what good does that do if the guy expressed his desire to play somewhere else. Usually they end up coming to a resolution that makes both parties happy and move on.
