"The Head Football Coaches Definitive Guide to Relations With Local Law Enforcement" - Art Briles w/ Foreword by Urban Meyer
Osborne retiring had nothing to do with it. 97 Nebraska > 97 Michigan and no one outside of Michigan thinks otherwise.. hint hint... that is why ESPN had 97 Nebraska ranked higher than 97 Michigan (considerably btw) and every other fan base agrees too.
Since the AP poll started Michigan has 2 national titles, 1 of which is split with Nebraska. Conversely Nebraska has 5, 1 of which is split with Michigan.
Since 2000...
Michigan 166-87
Nebraka 159-98
You have 7 more wins in the same timeframe of Nebraskas worst 2 decades in 60+ years.
Oh and we were in a national title game more recently than Michigan.
So you can believe that Nebraska will never return and that is fine - but historically speaking, Nebraska is more likely than Michigan.
Just pointing out facts. Nebraska went from national rivalry games like Oklahoma and Texas to local rivalry games with Wisconsin and Iowa.
They went from the Big 12 to one of the weakest division in CFB.
They went from their away games being played in the Southwest to being played in the Midwest.
They moved to the B1G, where they are now the worst academic school in the conference.
Nothing about the move made any sense for the football program. What are they going to woo recruits away from the elite programs with? It isn't big time games. It isn't academics. It isn't location.
And you can compare yourself to UM all you'd like -- I've openly admitted, UM may have a season where the stars align and we compete for a title, but the days of being a national power is done. UM can't compete recruiting wise with the top schools and we don't have enough local talent. UM can get top 10 classes or even once in a while a top 5 class.
To put it in perspective -- UM has the #2 class in the B1G last year. Our highest ranked recruit would have been the 10th highest ranked recruit for OSU
No chance in TODAY'S CFB will Nebraska be a national power again.
From a Financial perspective, moving to the B1G was a good move for Nebraska. From a long-term football perspective, I am not so sure. The recruiting and attention in the B1G is to the B1G East thanks to the Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State trio. They have most of the B1G's fans and media attention. This leaves the West weaker. Nebraska has effectively gotten into the same situation it was in with the B1G North. The B1G North was overshadowed by the South which had Oklahoma and Texas (as well as Oklahoma State and Texas Tech who aren't the strongest traditionally powers but have been generally good since 2000).
