I guess the key question is how much responsibility does the individual person bare versus the responsibility of the team/league? I haven't looked closely at the actual filing details, but it's curious that it appears that no NHL team was specifically named, just the league in general.

If and when it goes to trial, what comes out will be very interesting.

Didn't they already file a suit that got tossed?

What are they going to do if this fails? Sue his doctor? Beer companies? The manufacturer of whatever helmet he wore? The guys who install the glass?

This case would only have legs if the team doctor failed to meet some standard of care AND the NHL also was complicit in encouraging that doctor to fail to meet that standard of care.

This sounds like a prime candidate to be thrown out before it ever makes it to trial.

I'm guessing for the family this is more about raising awareness and trying to fix something they see as broken than actually winning money, but who knows.
