Def not, honestly if they banned fighting from the NHL, I'd still watch the key games, but not every one. I'd follow the local FHL more closely. The agressiveness of the sport as well as the game itself is what I love. I dont watch hockey just for the fights, but it is something that def appeases my appetite.

If thats the case, they should ban boxing and MMA, fighting is a part of hockey at the professional level.

Report: Former NHL player Bob Probert suffered brain disorder - NHL News | FOX Sports on MSN

Reading this, and knowing what this disease causes...starts to make me think maybe fighting should be weened out of the sport. *builds barricade in preparation*

I agree with you. I mean, I like a good hockey fight as much as the next guy, but I really don't buy into the "it's necessary to police the game" argument that inevitably comes up. That me be the case right now, with Campbell at the disciplinary helm, but if you got a reasonable human being handling on-ice player discipline then I think you could get sanctioned fighting out of the game just like all the other sports have done.

It sucks, though, because it's fun to watch two guys beat the hell out of each other. But if it's going to cause long-term problems for players' health, I can't object to it being outlawed.

Maybe if they make it so that both players have to completely agree and drop their gloves and helmet... And truly have harsh punishments for players who just attack without confirmation from the other player. But to get rid of it altogether, hell fucking no.

this is the great conundrum for the NHL ... there is no way to have a rule totally outlawing illegal hits to the head while still allowing blows to the head through fighting

/Im guessing everyone has heard the story about former Chicago Bear Dave Duerson ... suicide: shot himself in the heart so they would have his brain intact to study

Banning fighting in hockey wouldn't affect my watching habits all all. I'd still watch as much as I could.

I'm not in favor of it though, for 2 reasons:

1. Hockey is one of the few, if only, contact sports that allows you to carry a potential weapon with you. When used carelessly or maliciously, it can seriously injure and end careers. Players who don't take this responsibilty seriously usually have to fight, and that helps, IMO, the players police the game to an extent. I think the stick work would get completely out of hand if there was no danger of having to fight.

2. If these guys know the risks and are still willing to take them, have at it. Its a traditional part of the game, and why mess with tradition?

Ban fighting, and watch blows to the head increase... would you rather have blows to the head in an entertaining fashion between two willing combatants, or blows to the head delivered by a cheap scumbag to an unsuspecting victim? While in this case I don't think that for every blow to the head you remove from the game by banning fighting you would be adding one on the other end, I do believe there is a correlation.

I do not think fighting should be banned, if it was it would not affect my viewing whatsoever.

I do get tired of fights after clean hits on good players, no one should be immune to being checked IMO. And I get tired of players fighting to spark their teams, usually its enforcer on enforcer so its no big deal but I prefer the fights that mean something and have some anger behind them.

i just wanted to clarify what i said above

the NHL cant introduce a rule totally eliminating hits to the head and then turn the other cheek and allow fighting because fights include punches to the head

I dont think there is any desire to eliminate fighting ... I think the league office has come to terms with the fact that the fans want it and its a part of the game

therefore

we will never see an ultra stringent rule eliminating all hits to the head

what if ovi was boarded from behind and he was out for 4-6 weeks....you wouldn't want someone to kick the other guys ass for taking out your star player.......???????????????

not sure if this story made its way onto these boards the other day

Young players poorly protected, Marty McSorley says - The Globe and Mail

“I know myself, there are times when I shave, I have trouble seeing the right side of my face,” said McSorley. “That’s just from head injuries, or what have you, but when I try to shave my right sideburn, I have trouble focusing on it.

“Then there are times when I’ll walk into a room and I’ll stand there and go ‘Why am I here again?’ – and you just don’t know. You don’t know if it’s from all the contact you’ve had over the years or what.

“With everything that’s gone on, with so many of the guys. … I mean, we had serious concussions and you’d sit on the bench and the trainer would keep asking if you were okay to go.

“So I keep an eye on it, on whether there are some things I’ve slipped on or whatever. It’s very, very real.”

Of course I would! Like I said, I like the fights, but I would understand if the league decided they were too dangerous to continue. What I would like even better, though, is for the league to take a hard line on the cheap shots like the situation you described. While I'll enjoy the fight, what does my team really get out of a fight AFTER you've already taken out our best player? Five-minute coincidental fighting majors? Hardly seems like a wash.

agreed, what they need to stop is the rejects running around trying to earn respect smashing peoples heads into the glass....all starts from the top, however in the heat of battle sometimes it's hard to take the high road
