Enthusiasm will be fine come Sept. Good God - its freaking preseason. Whether the fan base stays engaged all depends on how the Redskins do in Sept & Oct. Their schedule is pretty brutal, but there are games that appear to be winnable. IMO it all depends on if the upgrades for the run game & run defense pan out. They certainly have potential in that area, but you never know how that will translate.

I am certainly looking fwd to this season. No predictions - good or bad - just waiting to see how this unfolds. HTTR
Enthusiasm will be fine if we are winning. However, if we start off slow (as usual under Gruden), this team is is serious jeopardy of losing, permanently, at least a portion of their fan base. Hell, it’s already happened, just look as season ticket sales.

I think this board reflects this truth. In years past, the activity on this board one camp opened was much greater than this year.

Where there is smoke, their is always fire.

The board isn't dead. There's just not much to talk about because there aren't any games going on right now.

Believe you me; I'm a member of another Skins forum that truly has died. The last post in it was back in late July and no one has posted since. Activity is slow right now because there's not much to talk about, but there's still activity going on, right now.

Also, is it just me or did we not really get that much out of training camp news?

It's not that you and and the great members didn't talk about it... but at the very least I would have liked 1 paragraph each day from guys like Kiem/Tandler or whoever, that talked about what they saw in Guice at practice.

I feel like out of the 10 days, they talked about him 3-4 times. So either Gruden doesn't have enough time to test all the RBs in camp, or we just aren't getting stories about it.

Same thing could be said for other vital pieces of our team. For example, how has Jonathan Allen looked this camp? All i know is that he wants to dominate, and that he wants the Dline to be thought of as badasses (for the most part). A couple of mentions have been made but overall they haven't really been of substance.

This team will finish in the 8-8 to 10-6 range, possibly closer to 10-6 than breaking even. Track the history of this team and this year statistically points toward a winning year. They will definitely vie for a playoff spot because of the following reasons.

1. Good health...This team has been devastated in recent seasons primarily due to an inability to keep key players healthy. Noting that, the best ability is availability, having all of our guys for the majority of the season will go a long way towards keeping them in the playoff hunt. This is especially true of Trent Williams, Morgan Moses, Jordan Reed and almost any starting Defensive lineman.

2. QB play.....While there's an ongoing number of posters who have certain feeling about the inevitable loss of Cousins, the truth is gaining Alex Smith will prove to be a lateral move where youth and promise will be offset with experience. Throw in a few extra wins, along with Alex's willingness to consistently connect on the deep ball, and we just might have the hard to convert calling out in unison, "Yeah-we like that!"

3. Line Play... Games are won and loss here, if we're able to consistently run the ball and pass protect while limiting our opponents from doing the same the wins will mount.

4. Josh Norman...The unquestioned leader of the secondary will have to set the example by returning to the form that not that long ago had him ranked among the very best in the league.

5. J. Gruden.... No doubt, a key year for this guy, being the first to survive into a 5th year in Dan Snyder's organization. Now extended through the 2020 season , let's see if he's grown through the experiences of the previous 4 seasons. Patience in a ground game will be the second indicator towards noting his growth. The first has already taken place with intense hitting during this camp. While it's possible the hitting is reflective of upgrades in talent, especially, along the defensive front, he has allowed it to become a noteworthy change from previous preseason camps. If it translates into a game one win at Arizona, his first in 4 years, then there just might be something different/special about him after all.

Do you think the fan base is as engaged now as it was 10 years ago? 15 years ago? 20 years ago?

Eagles had 40k show up to watch them practice. Skins are lucky to have 2-3 rows watching the practice.... I remember getting amped for fan appreciation day and doing my best to get down to training camp at least 1 time per offseason..

now? meh

This is without even going into the regular season "home crowd" which is pretty well documented and discussed

I don't think that NFL fans in general are as engaged as they were 10-15 years ago. This is magnified for the Redskins due to recent poor records, ownership issues & high prices for tickets & related things.

Of course the Eagles had huge #s for practice -they just won the SB. Not sure if it would be that big, but you better believe that the Skins would have huge crowds coming off a similar season.

As for the large # of fans for visiting teams - well - that is no doubt related to losing records but also other factors. I kind of have a hard time arguing against someone say selling their tickets for a game or two & then basically getting the rest of the season for free. I understand fan loyalty, but there is an economic factor especially when the team is doing poorly & you often get a much better experience watching the game at home or in a bar in this era.

This certainly can all change quite a bit if the team starts winning more (I know - a lot to be proven there). I was pretty down overall over the past year, but several offseason moves have me excited. Will it last? Well only winning and/or signs of progress will keep the attention of myself and others.

Try going to the boards for some other teams on this forum. Some of them have not have activity in months or even years. This isn't just a Redskins type issue.

yeah I see that... I also think that boards like these or old ESPN (which IMO was the best) are a bit of a thing of the past....

Reddit and Twitter has taken their place.

I'm not sure sportshoopla gives out the most accurate representation of the overall landscape and this could be an anomaly.

These are a lot of the same folks from ESPN, old habits die hard

It would be interesting to know how many of the people who post on this board are new visitors who didnt migrate or hear about this forum when ESPN closed

You are optimistic, I'll give you that.
Don't confuse the "inevitable loss of Cousins" with choosing not to sign him.
I think 8-8 would be a successful season at this point.

Cousins was loss when they didn't sign him following the 2015 season. It was the only window in which this was possible. After that Kirk and his reps figured out the one year guarantee route. (playing under the cap) In fact, isn't his current contract simply 3 one year fully guaranteed ones?

While it's true that they failed to sign him then, it was his choice not to sign anything other than what the tag offered beyond that.

I disagree. Snyder could have made it happen in 2015, 2016 or 2017.

OK, we disagree, however, what we know looking back is that Kirk and his agent both stated publicly that they would be perfectly happy playing under the tag each year that he did. Didn't his (Kirk's) father also publicly state that his son wasn't going to sign no matter what was offered in 2016?

When it all played out and he ACTUALLY did play under the tag and never did sign, nor initiate a possible contract, we have to go with what they publicly declared as truth. Supposition as to what Snyder woulda, shoulda, or could have done is moot.

In fact, I believe this type of speculation, is the primary reason why there are people upset about "losing" Kirk. It takes two to tango, if one side is willing and the other is not what do you have? The only time period that we know for certain as having both sides open to negotiating a new contract is after the 2015 season. Beyond that, good faith negotiations from either side is conjecture.

Kirk said many times that he wanted to stay in Washington. No one would want to without a long term deal. Snyder didn't step up and lock up a QB for the next 10 years.

Yep, but at what cost? Clearly, Kirk and his people wanted fully guaranteed contract(s) (after all, that's what they got in Minny) Something that Snyder has never done since he's been the owner. To be fair, Snyder could have offered a "hell yeah" deal and Kirk might have signed it. At the end of the day, the end of Cousin's time here began after the failed post 2015 season negotiations. I said so then, and as we all now know, it's been proven true.

I agree that 2015 was when the Redskins blew it. Following the 2016 season Allen held a public presser to declare how fair they had been and detailed what they offered Cousin's. Anyone that isn't a moron knew he had been low balled and disrespected by his GM. Remember him rubbing Dan's head and saying "How do you like me now?!" They still had a shot after 2016, no where near the shot they had in 2015. Bruce an Scot and because it his team Dan failed. They ended up paying the same salary for Smith and their newly signed backup Colt McCoy. Correct, that Cousin's was gone following the 2017 season. Can't blame him, he took all the risk playing under a one year contract three years in a row.

I'm no "moron" but, SM was the GM...and, he was the one who's head KC rubbed saying "how do you like me now".

but, that sounded good sport.

Taking a wait and see attitude dad. Hard to know much until they start playing real football.

I am excited to see the Dline this year with the additions of Payne and Settle and Allen and Ionman coming back healthy.

Very excited to see Guice play. The WRs are mehhhh until the show me differently. Interested to see how Quinn does in the preseason. Right now I am mehhhh on Smith but will hope for the best.

Also looking forward to seeing Apke play a bit since I am a Penn State fan. I believe a few people here called him a bad pick. We will see. No doubt he needs some time to learn but he does have some skills.

I am following the Vikings some too. What a shock huh?

I think action will pickup after the game Thursday.

no, it's not a "shock" that you will be following the vikings.
