I'd actually be really interested in letang, assuming the market is down on him...

oh shit, didn't realize his hit was 7.25 for the next 8 years. that's real steep. I was gunna say he's a pretty solid offensive dman that's been hurt all season so his value is down. but holy shit is he overpaid, and looking in to it further, holy shit is he hurt a lot.

nevermind

If Letang is healthy and on his game I'd say 7.25 is fine. It's fun to shit on him, and sometimes it's warranted, but he can be a #1.

The injuries worry me as does trading with the Penguins.

asking him to be healthy is a big question though.. in his last 3 seasons his best GP total was 51 games. granted one year was the lockout, but he still missed 17% of the games that year. (I will admit I forgot about the lockout when looking at his gp/pt totals the first time)

if his contract was shorter, I'd risk it. but through 2022 (age 35) when he's already breaking down (age 27).. I'd be very nervous about adding that contract.

In the end I wouldn't take the risk, but I would be intrigued. Last thing we need is another big contract on defense.

Penguins would have to pay a huge chunk of Letang's salary to get good value in return but they're not in a position where they can keep money when they're trying to get rid of it - they might as well keep him if they can't move him, maybe he gets it together

I really hate saying I want anyone injured, especially not a Penguin, but part of me wishes we could just put Tang on LTIR. He's probably the biggest reason Ray Shero lost his job.

letang is kind of like hartnell to me. I think there is more value to keeping letang/hartnell than there is to trading them. even if it does get rid of unsavory contracts. they still play valuable minutes and provide valuable contributions. eating some of their salary and throwing in some draft picks just to get rid of them will hurt the team more than just keeping them. IMO.

I'm sure that was part of the reason but I don't think it was the main reason - the inability to draft well just really hurt him - not that the coach didn't have his flaws because clearly he did too but the GM didn't give the coach enough players around the stars to work with - it's hard to mix and match players when you know you don't have the depth

Pens will always have depth problems as they pay a few guys big bucks making it difficult to fill out your roster. Those star players therefore have to produce at star rates which they haven't come playoffs.

Even though star players should play like stars, a lot of times in the playoffs, it's the 2nd-3rd-4th line players who step up because they get open ice when the 1st liners get keyed on

It was all on the coach for not playing the prospects. We were at our best early on in the season when we were playing our prospective dmen. Our coach will never play the prospects unless he is forced to. Hard to blame Shero for his draft picks when we never give the prospects a chance.
