Bruins are going to need to make room for Marco Sturm and (maybe) Marc Savard in the near future. Sounds like Blake Wheeler is being dangled.

One NHL scout spoke with CSNNE.com between periods of Saturday night's game and confirmed that Blake Wheeler's name is one popping up most often in trade discussions with the Bruins leading up to their salary cap day of reckoning. The scout also said he's visited the Providence Bruins several times this season, and has left the P-Bruins unimpressed beyond the offensive ability of Matt Bartkowski at defenseman.

Bruins Notes: Seguin winging it for Boston

It would have to be a soft trade. I'm wondering if a first rounder is a reasonable price to ask for Wheeler. Or at least a very high second round pick. It would be nice going into the draft with three picks in the top round. He's an RFA next year so you'd have to work out a contract. In his first two years in the league he's been ~20-20-40 player. Big guy (6'5"), but not a banger.

No way Wheeler brings in a first rounder...especially considering that he's going to have to go to a team that has the cap space (so in other words the bad teams with more at stake in a first rounder). I think he MAY get a second rounder (depending on the team he's dealt to), but it will really come down to how desperate the B's get to move salary.

Just checked Capgeek and it looks like 17 teams have the space to take on his $2.2 mil salary. Too bad Pittsburgh doesn't because their fans are always saying they need wingers. Boston will probably get pretty desperate at some point soon so yeah, he might be taken for the cheap. Dammit.

Or maybe some GM could just be really cool and take Marco Sturm's $3.5 mil contract off our hands even tho he's coming off of a serious leg injury. That would be awesome.

I thought there was speculation Ryder might be sent to the minors if they couldn't trade him. Wheeler would be the next option of course. The Bruins have too many guys with no trade clauses.

I've heard that but it's in bad form. Burying a legit NHL player in the minors because you didn't manage your salary cap doesn't do a lot to entice future free agents and it might piss off the team (unless you just won the Cup, of course). And yeah, I hate NTC's. I think the NHL should get rid of them. In Boston Savard, Horton, Thomas, Recchi, Sturm, Chara, and Seidenberg all have one.

NTC's are part of the old regime in my opinion, but they still have a place in the sport...however complicated they can get when GMs try to trade those guys...anyway, trust me AJ, I'd kill for a guy like Wheeler (said Ryder...meant Wheeler...however, I wouldn't mind Ryder either!!!) on the Pens. He sort of reminds me of Kunitz as far as production goes...would be helpful to have on Geno's line, or something like that. Obviously we couldn't take that kind of salary without moving one everyday player out of the picture. Obviously we could move Comrie...but that's not a lot of money there. Anyway, no way it's happening, so no use in discussing it...

Three-way trades are rare, but they do happen. It does seem like Pittsburgh and Boston would make good partners so if we can just find some gullible third GM to make it all work...

Put Ryder on waivers dammitt. The Isles need somebody, anybody who can put the puck in the net.

Tavares is in some kind of crazy slump, right? It's weird because he started the season on fire. Maybe he needs a new center.

Actually Tavares has 7 goals. Granted 3 of them came in one game. They just don't have much around him. Grabner scored his 4th today. Big Whoop. The loss of Okposo has really hurt this team. Bailey started off great & hasn't been the same since he came back from injury.

They really are perfect trade partners...I would love one of your wingers. What's Ryder's cap hit?

Too high. $4 mil. Wheeler would give the same production and is a cheaper date. I wouldn't be surprised if either one jumped up to a 30-40 goal scorer on Crosby or Malkin's side.

I really liked Ryder as a Hab but he was pretty awful his last season there so I understand why they let him go.

Unless his style of play has greatly changed he doesn't bring much to the game besides scoring, so if he isn't scoring he isn't helping.

I think Wheeler has more upside, but I dont think he'll get a 1st round pick.

I think the reason I most want either of these two is that they always score on the Pens...which is the biggest reason I wanted Horton. *sigh* Penguin killers.
