Meh.

If you can get a 4th liner who can defend his teammates and actually play, I'd say a 3rd round pick is worth it.

Most 3rd round picks are lucky to become AHL regulars, much less NHL players.

I think we'll both agree that points are not the be-all end-all when determining how valuable a player is to a particular team.

If I list the 8 players I'll be very surprised if you think any of them are/were less valuable than Bollig.

Well I think that everyone knows that what a 27th place team probably really needs to turn it around is a decent 4th line.

I think that 27th place teams need upgrades just about everywhere. Maybe this forces McGrattan or Westgarth to the press box on a more regular basis.

3rd round picks mean next to nothing. If you can upgrade ANYWHERE for a 3rd round pick and low salary numbers it is not a terrible move.

I fully support this statement, and can vouch for Canuck's undying support for (terrorizing) Maple Leaf fans.

Kris Versteeg averaged more than 7 minutes per game in the WCF? Ouch.

Averaged 11:56 in 15 postseason games this year it looks like, five and a half minutes more than Bollig played

I don't think it's a "terrible" move. I just think that the upside of a 3rd round pick is worth more to a rebuilding team at the bottom of the standings. Cake needs to come before icing, and a 3rd rounder still has a chance to be cake.

Let me ask something else. Would you be happy if your team took a 4th line facepuncher in the 3rd round or would you think it was a waste of a pick?

You don't "need" to acquire Bollig in order to put McGrattan and/or Westgarth in the press box, that's merely adjusting for the stupidity of Burke rather than just calling his ideas about roles stupid in the first place. Similarly the Leafs don't have to sign Shawn Thornton to a stupid contract to scratch Orr and McLaren either, even though that's the standard that's seemingly been set by Mr. Potato Head (hopefully ShannyJanney will finally set him straight).

If my team drafted a player in the 3rd round who ended up as useful as Bollig I'd be happy indeed. Third rounders are unlikely to play regularly in the NHL. Bollig is markedly better than the likes of Orr, McLaren, McGratts and Westgarth. I'd say his skills are more in line with Brandon Prust or Chris Neil. I don't think he's as good as either of those guys (particularly Neil in his prime) but I do think that Bollig is a legitimate 4th line player without any face punching included. The face punching still holds some value in the NHL (for better or worse) making him a plus 4th liner, IMO.

I don't know Calgary's prospect pool very well but I don't think it's so deep that a guy like Bollig will block anyone. At worst he gets waived to the minors. No big deal because he has a really small salary.

I guess I just don't value one 3rd round pick very highly.

I really don't like BleacherReport because I can't stand slideshows, but they rank the current Flames prospect pool as 4th best in the league.

Below are the top 5 (and I threw in Edmonton's well just because):

14. Edmonton
5. Montreal
4. Calgary
3. NYI
2. Tampa
1. Anaheim

On another note, who knew these many bytes who have been attributed to a 3rd round pick and Brandon Bollig?

/Yes, I've contributed more than my fair share (lol)

I'm not a fan of bleacher report either and this list is another reason why.

Montreal's prospects are better than both Buffalo and Florida's? :pound:

All sorts of WTF in there. Not saying the Flames aren't in good shape prospect-wise but this list is pretty hinky.

If I were in Calgary's position early on in a rebuilding effort I'd rather take on the risk associated with a 3rd round pick. I'd rather have a chance of getting a top 6 forward/top 4 defenseman and risk the downside of ending up with nothing. Reasonable 4th line players are freely available for nothing but salary every Canada Day, especially for a smart team.

Tell me something. Why do you think Bowman made the trade? The Blackhawks are contending now, they have cake, so they'd seemingly have more use for a depth player ("icing") than the Flames. I suspect he did it because he knows full well he can just easily go get the next Bollig and not have 4 years committed to him. And the 3rd might turn into something on top of that.
