To add specifically - here is a quote from Taylor:

"He's a guy that we studied intently before the process ever started. Really felt good about how he fits in with us and so he's a guy that we're excited to bring in there and compete for the job," Taylor said of Patrick at the NFL Annual League Meeting. "I liked what I saw from the film and he played against a lot of guys that we have to face. A lot of those defensive lines. Familiarity with some of the schemes that we utilize because he's kind of been in that same ballpark of terminology and I just love his approach."

The issue here is that you are asking a guy who looked good in more minimal true-pass sets and then are banking on him coming into a new scheme/different scheme and INCREASING those true pass sets. Maybe it'll work, but it's like taking a square peg and then hoping that you can round off the corners to fit in a round hole. Why not go and find a round peg?

This organization FIGHTS itself to be good. It has no clue how to actually be good other than getting really freaking lucky.
Because Katie won’t pay for them.

While I don't disagree...he's the crazy part - you can go get a lower tier IOL/player - and still NOT pay them...just find one that actually fits your scheme.

This is basic sports stuff...but, I am not surprised.
Guards are a dime a dozen. Scheme fit isn’t a thing. Any bum off the street can get bulldozed into Joe Burrow’s kneecaps. The Blackburns are football savants. They’ve had the secret sauce for 35 years. Cracked the code with their five man scouting department. The 31 other teams with fully staffed football operations are just wasting money.

Now if these greedy meatheads like Trey would just play for half of what they are worth we can finally order the rings around here.

the bengals are top heavy giving positions in the front office to friends and family

and we only have 4 people in our scouting department now, haha.

...

I guess they figure whatever starting guards we may sign through free agency will just get injured or show up to camp out of shape and we'll just end up running Cody Ford and Cordell Volson anyhow.

FC Cincinnati has a similar problem with full backs. the local guy Hagglund always ends up starting by the end of the year because the starters get injured. and a lot of fans cry that Hagglund should not be on the roster at the beginning of the season.

so I guess, in a way, we should be happy that we have good backup guards that will end up starting anyway, lol.

Risner would probably play for free, and the Blackburns still would rather run Volson and Ford out there.

I just have a gut feeling they will either A) reach for IOL at #17 over potential defensive difference makers, or B) ignore it until Day 3.

No in between.

Which I’m okay with a Day 2-3 rookie if you sign a Risner/Scherff after the draft to lock down a starting spot.

Ignoring both and just hoping Volson or Ford don’t get Burrow killed is criminal…but on brand for how the franchise operates.

They said Risner's value appears to be at 4.5 million for a year. He had a 72+ pass protection rating last year. How was our guards last years pass protection grade? Volson and Cappa?
