I'm actually surprised nobody has voted for or mentioned Lenny Bruce...
Jonathan Winters was just all around funny. He did not need what comedians refer to as "Material". Didnt need to wrtie anything. He just had his way of looking at things that was hilarious. He could also do all phases of comedy.
Also, it is hard to compare different eras too. Guys like George Burns and Jack Benny had to limit their act due to what was deemed acceptable at the time.
I like the one-liner comedians like Henny Youngman and Rodney Dangerfield. Not many successful modern day 1 liners. Steven Wright and Mitch Hedberg were probably closest to that description.
