I always like to hear the other teams announcers. A lot of good ones out there and this thread was inspired by Pix posting about the 1980 Olympic team and of course that wonderful call of "do you believe in miracles"

So who has the best play by play

My vote goes with the Pens Mike Lange

I like Lange.

Prime Bob Cole was awesome. I still like Cole despite his years of Leaf homerism on national TV.

Jim Hughson is the consummate professional an calls a great game.

Bob Cole,Jim Hughson from CBC,Mike Emrick NBC

I like Doc too. Alot of people hate him. Mostly younger hockey fans, but I enjoy Doc's calls.

It's the clowns he's usually paired with that I cannot stand...

For the national broadcasts I really like Doc. I don't understand the hate he gets. I obviously have love for Mike Lange, and most of the CBC guys are solid. I do however associate their voices with the watching of 2009 playoff clips over and over...so, you know. Good memories.

Homer pick but I have to go with Doc. Devils are honoring him tomorrow, fired up for it.

I like any pxp guy who doesn't aggravate me like Steigerwald does...

One guy i do enjoy hearing is John Forslund from Carolina.

But for me the homer in me thinks Lange is the best (when he is sober...)

I love listening to Mike Lange. It's not just the artistry with which he makes the calls, and the detail with which he calls the game, but the incredible about of work he puts in pre-game for research so that he knows everything there is to know about both teams.

I also really like Doc and whoever the play-by-play man for the Canadiens is. He called a great game the last time the Penguins played them, in my opinion, but that's all I've heard of him.

I like Jim Hughson, Chris Cuthbert, and Bob Cole though Cole amuses me generalized names like “the goalie” and his Leafs bias. I like Doc Emerick too, he is fun.

The worst; I do not like the Capitals combination of Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin but oddly enough I find them decent (not good) separately. I hate Rick Jeanneret who to me yells every 10th word whether it merits yelling or not and he cannot pronounce a lot of names. Mike Lange to me is/was the absolute worst. In my opinion he thought people were tuning in to him to hear him not watch the game. Absolute garbage IMO, though I know a lot of people like him. I know plenty of people who hate him too including numerous Penguin fans. I still hear him on XM radio now and then and he is just as terrible as ever.

Was never much of a Lange fan myself, but I thought it was just me.

I like his goal calls. I dont listen to him often. Guess I should have been more specific in what I was looking for as far as this post.

A good PBP announcer is someone you can listen to,close your eye's and follow the play. I don't care how loud they yell when the home team scores or how quiet they are when the other team scores.

What I like about our local guy's is if the team is playing like shit they will say so. That's what I like, don't sugar coat it just call it. I have heard a lot of announcing teams in major markets where their team never makes a mistake according to them.

You can have them if it makes you feel good but I want the truth and not some rose colored glasses giving their opinion.

See what I like about Sam Rosen is he still get's pretty loud when the other team scores. I don't really get to hear a lot of other announcers, but I will agree that Doc is a good one.

That's great! My point is if you ever listened to WGR550 doing the Sabres broadcast and heard Paul Hamilton give his report he is brutal. He will call the players out by name and say things like that was a "stupid" or "dumb" play.

The Sabres broadcast team will always say things like "Oh brother the Sabres got away with a slash there" or similar calls.

That's what I want not a bunch of goofy comments and as I said it's disappointing to hear the comments from some major east coast teams crews that are blatant homers. I don't want to name them but most fans here know who they are.

1. love when DOC calls a game
2. always liked Gary Thorne
3. Forslund (yeah, homer a bit, but i like the way he calls national games)

Chuck Kaiton on the radio side is absolutely amazing. Been the only radio guy the 'Canes/Whalers ever had. Broadcasting hall-of-famer.
No idea how that man can talk that fast and paint the picture so clearly.
If it wasn't for the damn TV delay, I would have the sound off and Chuck on every game.
