I dont even think that hit warranted the game misconduct. I think that was enough.

If the guy throwing the fucking elbow knew it might hurt him as much he is less likely to do it.

Good point Boss, i cannot tell you how many former players talk about how much more it hurt their shoulder from throwing a clean check, than the pain of the player on the receiving end of it.

looks like Bert did get fined lol

When a major penalty and a game misconduct is assessed for a foul resulting in an injury to the face or head of an opponent, an automatic fine of one hundred dollars ($100) shall be imposed.

In my opinion, intent should only add to a suspension, not determine it. Any hit to the head should warrant a suspension, especially an elbow. I know it wasn't malicious, but every player has the responsibility to be in control of his body, just like he has to be in control of his stick. In my opinion, this was a 1 to 2 game suspension type of play (just for being lazy). It's not unreasonable and makes the message much clearer.

I fail to see how this hit qualifies for the new rule unless you count Bert turning his back:
Rule 48 - Illegal Check to the Head

48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A lateral or blind side hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principal point of contact is not permitted.

48.2 Minor Penalty - There is no provision for a minor penalty for this rule.

48.3 Major Penalty - For a violation of this rule, a major penalty shall be assessed (see 48.4).

48.4 Game Misconduct – An automatic game misconduct penalty shall be assessed whenever a major penalty is assessed under this rule.

48.5 Match Penalty - The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent with an illegal check to the head.

48.6 Fines and Suspensions – Any player who incurs a total of two (2) game misconducts under this rule, in either regular League or playoff games, shall be suspended automatically for the next game his team plays. For each subsequent game misconduct penalty the automatic suspension shall be increased by one game.

If deemed appropriate, supplementary discipline can be applied by the Commissioner at his discretion (refer to Rule 28).

This was neither a lateral or blindside hit, he saw him coming.

Auto, I respect you but "Needing" player should never ever factor in. It's the action that should count not the standings.

I'm just justifying that sitting almost the entire game was enough of a punishment. Bert is not throwing these hits every game, he's more into the slewfoot and ankle slashing nowadays.

That said, I would have been fine with 1 game or 2 suspension.

I think it's the elbow, not the contact to the head, that's suspendable. I just want to see all hits to the head be automatic suspensions. They're unnecessary.

I would agree, but the new rule only states lateral or blindside hits to the head.
They would have to refine the rulebook again.
In this case, since it clearly was not a violation to the new rule, they went by intent, which was not there as ruled.

Yeah, I agree. Just like you being responsible for your stick being too high even when it's incidental or accidental, you should also be responsible for your body for hits that are too high. Some guys will be suspended without any intent or by accident (like the Steckel "hit"), but that's a small price to pay compared to a guy's career or serious long-term health issues. Something has to be done to change the mentality b/c the message isn't getting through.

You want to see clean hits and good fights, but we have too many dirty hits and too many useless fights. Something has to change.

I'm just sick of fights coming as a result of clean hits. A good hit shouldn't result in a fight. Ever. It can escalate to that if two guys kinda target each other, but I hate when some meat head rushes in after a good hit to beat up the perpetrator.
